Crawford Dominates Diaz, Calls Out Pacquiao Post-Fight

in #boxing7 years ago

This weekend provided a string of good fights through the various weight classes, the biggest match being Terence Crawford stopping Felix Diaz in the 10th round to retain his junior welterweight titles.

Crawford was definitely considered the favorite but we wanted to see if a technical guy like Diaz could provide any challenge for him, and it ended up looking like a now typical dominant performance by Crawford. Crawford came out southpaw from the start, and used his boxer/puncher style to out fight the gold medalist Diaz.

Bud’s ability to adapt during the fight is one of the key reasons why he is a top pound-for-pound fighter today. You might be able to tag him a handful of times in the early parts of a fight but Crawford has so far always found a way to make the proper adjustments and proceed to win decisively.

What’s next for Terence “Bud” Crawford?

In the post fight interview with Hbo’s Max Kellerman, Crawford plainly said that Pacquiao is the guy he and his team want to fight. He also mentioned that if that can’t fight be made, a unification fight with Julius Indongo interests him, as does a fight with welterweight champion Keith Thurman. The only issue with the last two names is that Thurman just underwent elbow surgery that will put him out of commission for at least 6 months.

Pacquiao does currently have a fight scheduled with Australian Jeff Horn soon, but he is expected to win easily, so be on the lookout for Crawford vs Pacquiao later this year. I’d personally like to see a unification bout with Indongo, followed by Pacquiao early next year. Crawford looks to be in his prime, or at least very close to it, so for me it’s a treat to see him up against anybody.

Gervonta Davis vs Liam Walsh

Another big fight from the weekend was Gervonta “Tank” Davis traveling to England to defend his super-featherweight title against the undefeated Liam Walsh from Britain. Davis scored his 9th consecutive KO in the 3rd round as Walsh simply couldn’t handle the power and aggression of Davis.

Gervonta, now 18-0-0 with 17 KOs, is receiving a ton of hype lately, and that is mostly due to him being the protege of Floyd Mayweather. If the greatest fighter of this generation thinks that Davis is the future of boxing, then it only makes sense to pay attention to the 22 year-old champion.

Style-wise, Davis bares no resemblance to Mayweather, as he is an aggressive power puncher who throws wild, winging shots and doesn’t jab very much. So far his natural power has been the great equalizer, and this is what separates him from the rest of the pack. It will be interesting to see if Floyd can pass on defensive skills as a mentor, since Davis seems to be a puncher and not a boxer.

One potential fight already being talked about is with fellow super-featherweight title holder Vasyl Lomachenko. Lomachenko is already considered the top pound for pound fighter in the sport despite such a short career, and when asked at a press conference, Floyd Mayweather said that there is “No rush” to match Davis against Lomachenko.

This makes perfect sense, but at the same time Tank’s power could be the only way that anyone in and around this division could beat Loma. At only 22 years old though, it is certainly smarter to build a career up slowly instead of pushing for a fight that Davis wouldn’t be favored in at all. This weekend’s fight was another entertaining KO by Davis, and his fan base surely grew because of it.

I would kill to see Crawford vs Mikey Garcia!

Lomachenko is amazing. And when you consider his age and amount of pro fights, its just all that much more amazing. I dont see him losing to anyone in the near future!! Who you got in GGG vs canelo? Following now! Good luck steeming!!

i agree on lomachenko, and im leaning toward canelo because he's such a great counter puncher and that plays into golovkins style

i'll send ya some if GGG wins! :)

And I will send you a few if canelo pulls off the miracle. Where do you think the odds will end up? Even or who will be favored? I'm also excited to see Loma get payback on salido for all the low blows in the first fight.
