I do guess that it is a sunshade filled with water. I do think that you walked to the end and your self of somebody else pushed the water out with an umbrella!
The first part is correct.
Let me see what we already have:
We know that there is a sunshade fill with water. The water is probably rain. They had to close it because of the weigth if the water, if not the sunshade could tear apart?
So that’s what they did!
Probably you were standing at the door and the water is push of because the sunshade went back into his casting?

Is it an automatic sunshade that slides in as soon as the sun dissapears or at a certain time at evening fall?

And the answer is ...
The shade automatically rolls in when it detects that the rain is falling.
Since it was quite a storm a pool of water already accumulated on the shade. When the canopy rolled all the way in this water obviously had someplace to go. So it dropped down like a waterfall :)
The owner warned us that this will happen so we were able to escape the watefall :)
