Boulder Sunday - Chiricahua MountainssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #bouldersunday5 years ago (edited)

Caught this picture of the Chiricahua mountains when I last visited Arizona. The profile of the mountain resembles an indian wearing a headdress, maybe Cochise or Geronimo himself.

This is Echo Canyon with lots of strange monolithic structures.

Plenty of stacked boulders here that look like heads of alien creatures.

Here is one of the desert spiny lizards who lives on the stones, this one is a female with subdued coloring.

This is the male version, he has bright colors and likes to defend his territory with pushups.

Here's one trying to scare me away with threatening pushups. He would definitely win the #seven77 pushup challenge :-).

Last but not least a robberfly waits on the stones for a fly to come by so he can snatch it out of the sky for a meal.

Happy #bouldersunday @shasta

A very nice set of pictures, I like the mountain style view of the Indian head, I have seen that featured in TV shows and even in a movie or two I think, it is a cool looking mountain, and wonderful macro job on that fly.

I'm sure its been in a few westerns. Probably the lonesome dove series or the movie tombstone. Those flies are handy to have around they keep annoying house flies and biting horse flies in check.

Wow what a beautiful boulder mountain of many stones!
Very cool place @sketch.and.jam! Those boulder lizards look
fearsome guarding their boulders and flies! :-)
Thank you for sharing these wonderful rocks!

I used to catch them as a kid and they would open their mouth to bite. I knew a kid who would wear them like earrings. Once they bite they hang on for a while.

The male spiny lizard is certainly colorful!
Those rock formations are pretty impressive! I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that's sedimentary rock that highly eroded. There's a lot of volcanic rock formations out there also, like the first picture.

Yeah i have no idea how those rocks formed into towers like that. Maybe mud surrounded sediment then the tougher stuff stayed while wind and rain washed the rest away.

I have never seen the chiricahua mountains. Looks like it would be a great sunset location.

Pretty much anywhere in southern arizona is a good sunset location. All the dust really brings out the color in the fading light.
