How Much SBD Are You Losing Every Day?

in #bots8 years ago

There are a number of ways to earn money on Steemit and today we're going to look at one that you're probably already doing, writing posts.

But how much money are you leaving on the table that you could be putting in your pocket??

How do you know that you're maximizing the value of your posts? How do you get the highest amount of money possible so you can continue to grow your brand and spread your reach?

The easiest, simplest way is followers. They upvote your posts because they like your content, like you, or are just feeling generous. Maybe a whale's cat sat on the keyboard and accidentally gave you a 100% upvote for a Meeeeeowlion Dollars! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Bid Bots

Whether you have 1 follower or 1,000 followers, you can increase the payout amount you get on a post by using Bid Bots. We'll skip the whole morality, sustainability, ethics debate of the bots for now as they are part of the system and the witnesses don't seem to have a problem with the bots. Most of them actually run a bid bot.

My Experience

I decided to give them a try as I had accumulated a sizable amount of available SBD, for me at least. I went to https://steembottracker.com/ and looked at which bots were still projected to be profitable. As you can see from this screenshot, @postpromoter wouldn't be profitable to bid on for this round, but @mrswhale would be if I didn't bid more than 0.25 SBD. This also assumes that additional people don't continue bidding, thus driving down the profitability of all votes for this round.

Steembottracker.com

I found three different bots that still had a considerable amount of profitability left, with as little time left as possible. All three bids were with around 8 minutes left on the bidding round. After transferring the funds, I was in. The round ended and the bots voted on my posts the percentage of the vote I won.
image.png
The 1.5 SBD I bid on the vote was 2.15% of the total votes, so that's the percentage of @boomerang's upvote I got.

After all three bots had voted, the total value of my post went from $4.05 to $14.25! That's a substantial increase. However, I paid a total of 3.5 SBD for the votes. Will I end up with more money than I put in?

The Math

I know that @glenalbrethsen likes to geek out with numbers, so hopefully at least he will appreciate this analysis.

I used the bid bots on Day 3 of my post. Over the course of the next 4 days, I watched the projected payout value drop...and drop....and drop. Remember how I said that the value was $14.25? Yeah, well it ended up paying out at $10.74. So was it worth it?

Value with NO Bots

image.png

I used the amount that actually paid out on the post as a percentage that the post was worth after the bots voting and got 75.37% as the value it retained. So, if I had NOT used bid bots, I would have expected the above outcome. Not too bad.

Value WITH Bots

However, I DID use the bots, so the value increased even though it dropped to a payout value of $10.74. Of that amount, I got Steem Power worth $4.17 and 4.17 SBD worth $15.91 (assuming a price of $3.82 per SBD). This gives me a total value of $20.08!

The Profitability

I had to pay to get that increase though, so let's take a look at the difference. I paid 3.5 SBD to get the upvotes. Let's just use the same price of $3.82 for SBD as I wouldn't have sold it before, so it would have just been sitting in my account. That means the votes cost me $13.37.

The math isn't totally accurate, because remember the value of the post without bid bots was projected. There's no way to know for sure what it would have been.

image.png

According to approximate math, I gained approximately $5.79 in value. My curators got an extra $1.89 too!

Of the $5.79 increase, $2.90 was paid out as Steem Power and I also got 2.9 SBD. Assuming the same, $3.82 price for SBD, it is worth $11.07. Add the value of the SP and I got an additional value of $13.96 for the post at a cost of $13.37.

That means, I made a whopping $0.59 from using bidding bots!!!

Conclusion

It's up to you to decide if that's worth it. I can tell you a few things I did that helped my profitability. If I had not done them, I likely would have lost money.

  1. Wait as late as you can until using the bid bots. Many bots limit their voting to 3.5 days from post creation in order to be compliant with a certain Upset Kitty. By voting as late in this process as possible, it reduces the amount of time that the payout can depreciate as certain factors reduce it. (Too much to get into on this post. Just know it normally goes down.)
  2. Bid as late as you can in the round. If you bid early in the round it's more likely that people will overvote and there won't be enough value in the vote to cover your cost.
  3. Find bots that have a lot of value left. See above. If the value of the bids goes too high, profitability goes down. If you pick on that has almost closed, but has ample bidding space left, you're more likely to get extra for your bid.

There you have it. At these SBD prices, it can be profitable. However, as the price of SBD increases, it decreases the profitability of the votes as some of the value is converted at SP and some is "lost" to curators.

Therefore, the lesson is to BE CAREFUL and very intentional if you choose to use the bid bots. Just because it's there doesn't mean you're going to make money using it. Even if it says it's profitable, nothing in life is guaranteed.

Stay safe! Let me know what you think in the comments.

Very good, glad to see you diving into this issue my favorite man with the name I do not know. aka Arch ;) ...

@royaleagle has been doing extensive research on the bots too, so you guys should probably compare notes too. Educating others is a big way that you guys can do good and it is also a very much needed area of quality information. The fact is that most of the bots are taking people's money because they don't know what look for.. You have learned a lot and this is a great topic that you should continue to address!

Also thank you so much for your generous donation! For a man with no name that I know, you sure are one helluva guy! You're awesome :)

Thanks for the feedback.
He looks like he's got some cool notes.
You're welcome. You do good work and I want to help enable you to do that. Glad to be a part of it.

It is appreciated and it is going to help very much!

Been waiting for me to comment, have you? :)

I was on the road for 12 hours, so wasn't intentionally making you wait. Had I known though... just kidding.

To clarify: there is some number crunching that I do enjoy doing, but it's a painful exercise, especially when I know there are others who do it much better than me.

I do, however, enjoy analysis that is well done and easy to understand. You consistently meet that criteria, so awesome work.

Knowing that a) there are bots that aren't worth getting near, and b) there are others that might be but it requires a level of knowledge and good timing on the part of the user are things everyone needs to know.

Personally, though, it doesn't help me want to use them. I'm getting too old, I guess. We've got an irritated feline and now we have annoyed old guy. :)

Road trip! Sweet, where'd you go? Anywhere fun?

I'm glad it's easy to understand. I don't want to talk people out of using bid bots if that's their desire. I just like giving people information so they can make an informed decision. If you want to roll the dice, go for it!
I still think that because you post most days that you could benefit from a @steembasicincome membership. You should get your money back in 3 months. I haven't done that math on that myself. Maybe my next post!

Yeah, well I yelled at non-existent kids to get off my lawn today. I don't have a lawn! :D

Oh, and I guess it depends on what you consider fun. We're in the Salt Lake area of Utah visiting friends through Sunday morning, then we're heading up to eastern Idaho to visit our oldest son and his wife. We come back Monday, so it's a whirlwind trip of mostly driving. My car gets 32 mpg on the highway, so we only have to fill up once.

That is a lot of driving! Sounds like good times though. Getting to visit family and friends. Can't be all that bad. Have a safe trip!

Well, if you ever have a lawn, you will be prepared!

I await your analysis on steembasicincome before I do anything.

BTW, "You're my inspiration!" I posted with Busy. Signed up and posted. It was cool. They promised me a big upvote. Grand total value of it: $0.000! Whoohooo!

I saw the upvote, so I figured you must have used Busy. I'm sorry about the amount of the upvote, though.

I haven't tried to get one from them, so I don't know if that's normal or not. I tried Busy because I'd heard it would save multiple drafts, and that it had a slider. There are other things I like about it, too, but it's not complete. There are things I like about Steemit, but it is what it is. If they merged the two, then added modern features to the hybrid, it would be great.

Agreed that they should merge the two. It seems like Steemit hasn't been updated in a while and it could use a few improvements. It still works though, so won't complain too much. ;)

@themanwithnoname, I've just started to use bid bots and I've been looking at them Thanks for the post!

You're welcome! I hope that analysis helps. I like math, so if you have more questions, feel free to ask and I can try to figure it out for you. :)

Using bots but using the free ones for now until i get some good amount of sbd

I know of the free original works bot, but apparently it is down because it hasn't stopped in my blog over the past few days. What are the other free bots are out there?

I'm curious what other free bots are out there too.

For now. Am using only the minon support

Minom support bot that i supply my link to once a day

That's a good one!

Thanks for the tip, we are just starting with bid bots to try and grow. Not convinced it is the way, but there is such a small classical music community here!

@musicapoetica I just listened to one of your concerts on DTube, Mozart at Den Haag ... awesome! It's a pity there's not more classical music out there. There's some really cool alternative music out there ... @antandra ... also not much following.

Thanks, we are still learning the ropes and have come up against the 7 day payout limit. We have to think about how we work with that, as it isn't really feasible to only have a 7 day reward period for something that takes so much time and effort. Onthe other side, it is more than what Facebook and YouTube offer...

I think we will continue with the experiment and hope to grow our audience over time!

On the music side, we hope to bring the entertainment back to classical music instead of it seeming like a stale place where you have to sit down, sit up and have music played at you!

If you are interested, we just uploaded a new video

Yeah, if you have niche interests, it can be difficult to gain traction. As more people join, hopefully you'll get a bigger following.

Hoping that will be the case, unfortunately the current stereotypical classical audience member is not really likely to appear on steemit!

That might be true for now, but the world is changing in ways that I wouldn't have expected. The wide variety of people I have seen on here lead me to believe that there should be an audience for you. Not everything happens overnight, but since you're one of the first here, you'll have a bigger piece of that pie when they come!

This is what we are hoping, to find a new type of audience here. The potential of this platform is quite astounding! Slow and steady!

I love how you detailed this post! I've used the bots on and off; sometimes however it does feel like I'm giving myself a Christmas present, other times I feel like I'm paying myself for a job well done. Ethics aside, don't you find that sometimes it's the "other" people who maybe aren't sure what they're doing and suddenly dump a huge 'bid' right at the end so it minimizes everyone else's on there...including that last persons? Kinda drives me crazy, so I've been staying clear for a bit:) Occasionally though, I've hit 'paydirt' and love them haha Thanks again!

Yeah, I think some people purposely overbid to make others lose money. Maybe the idea is that if people lose money on it they'll stop using them, thus opening the door for the those who continue to profit handsomely.

I started using them a couple weeks ago, I like them. I have not waited 3 days to use it but it makes sense, I will start waiting it out and see the difference. Great post.

I would prefer to use bots that allow you to vote up to 6 days in, but I don't want to attract negative attention from any Irritated Felines.

Thanks for the details @themanwithnoname (I recently wrote a post entitled In the desert on a horse with no name ... hahaha). As I'm still so ignorant about everything on Steemit, I appreciate your post. Don't think I'll spend too much time looking for bots, too much else to do!

I just read it. That's a cute horse.

There are a lot of other things to do, so until you get a product to sell and a production line that works, there's no point in buying a Super Bowl ad...so to speak. :) I'm still working on some of those things, so don't worry. We're all just taking it a day at a time and learning as we go.

Thanks for your feedback

My husband (@ray4u) and I use them. This is great info, thank you for sharing!

Hey I didn't know you guys were married:) It's so funny how you talk to so many different people on here and eventually see the connections:)

Do you have favorite bots that you use?

Thank you so much for this detailed analysis, @themanwithnoname!

Glad it was useful! It looks like you've got some pretty good articles yourself. Keep up the good work.

Thanks man! I'm actually still considering whether should I use bots for my articles, but I guess it's more for the sake of exposure and less for profit, yeah?

Anyway, I followed you - would love if we could connect on Steemit and support each other on this journey!

Sounds good! Looking forward to it.
