Don Quixote: a 17th century terrorist

in #books7 years ago

Let's set aside for a moment the tragedy of the figure of Don Quixote and compare him with the nowadays Islamic terrorists. Wild, isn't? It was this comparison that came to my mind when I read Cervantes's novel in the first place.

Islamic terrorists, either themselves or with the help of mentors, believe that the Western world and its values is rotten, and through the methods of intimidation, explosions and the spread of radical Islam, they seem to desire to see the world as taught in the Holy Scriptures (why else would they do it?). What does Don Quixote do? Having read knight novels, the idea-intoxicated hidalgo decides that he is a noble knight (a knight-errant as he calls himself), the world is mired in sin, he needs to "right wrong", save people and so on. What does he do in the process? The destruction of other's property, the killing of livestock, he sows chaos, solves private problems- all of this according to how the knights behaved in the old novels. Just like ISIS, Don Quixote hires a simpleton Sancho as his faithful servant and squire (later in the novel, Sancho starts to share Don's worldview!), promising him the governorship of the island - just like Islamists promise to their suicide bombers Paradise with the Huriyis if they destroy another objective. Islamists do it in the name of Allah (why, they even shout "Allah akbar" in a process). And Don Quixote? He does it in the name of an imaginary Dulcinea, his lover, whose name he also cries out while performing some feat. Some people despised him, some laughed at him, other feared. Rings the bell? How about his "nickname"? A knight of rueful countenance? have you ever heard of a smiling terrorist? bet you haven't. All in all, these are some of my thought about Quixote. If you've noticed other similarities, feel free to share in comments :D
