The Great Shark Hunt, Hunter S. Thompson. Signed First Edition.
“Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality. Weird heroes and mold-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of 'the rat race' is not yet final.”
~Hunter S. Thompson
The good doctor Thompson is without a doubt one of those legends, a larger than life figure that continues to fascinate. The Great Shark Hunt is Thompson's fourth book and the first of four Gonzo Papers volumes, which collected many of Hunter's harder to find essays and magazine articles. It was preceded by Fear and Loathing on the Campain Trail '72, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Hell's Angels. The Great Shark Hunt is notable in that the writings range from 1956 to the end of the 1970s, documenting his rise from Air Force and sports writing to the political and gonzo journalism he is most known for. This is the first printing, published in 1979, signed and with an awesome inscription by Thompson on the flyleaf:
