Rare Book of the Day – Lookout Cartridge, Joseph McElroy. First Edition.

Here's another McElroy gem. Lookout Cartridge was his fourth novel, published in 1974, and is a sort of political thriller concerning a filmmaker searching through London and New York for film footage that may have recorded a crime. In typical McElroy fashion, the sentences are exceedingly long and complex, perhaps incomprehensible, yet always seeming as if significant clues are present. This was his attempt to make the language feel as cinematic as possible. Many consider Lookout Cartridge to be McElroy's best work, with Larry McCaffery ranking it 39th in his top 100 20th-century English novels list. This is the first printing:
