Rare Book of the Day – Hogg, Samuel Delany. First Paperback Edition.
Hogg, Samuel Delany. First Paperback Edition.
Samuel Delany is a writer, professor and literary critic, perhaps best known for his science fiction novels. He's won four Nebula Awards, two Hugo Awards and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Recurring themes in Delaney's work include mythology, sexuality, memory, language and perception. He's a really interesting dude and has lived a pretty wild life. I highly recommend looking into him.
Originally completed by Delany in 1973, no one would publish Hogg until 1995 due to its extremely graphic narrative (think murder, coprophila, necrophilia, etc.). Despite the novels pornographic and violent content, numerous writers have given their endorsement, including Norman Mailer who stated "There is no question that Hogg by Samuel R. Delany is a serious book with literary merit." Furthermore, Jeffrey Tucker in his critical study of Delany says that Hogg"gave expression to the author's hostility toward a heterosexist society, an anger that had no socially constructive outlet prior to the modern Gay Rights movement."
