Literary Recording of the Day – J.R.R. Tolkien reads from The Hobbit (1952)

in #books6 years ago

This is just awesome. Tolkien's work has a great oratory quality to it, so to hear the man himself read it is a delightful treat. So here he is around 1952 reading Riddles in the Dark, Chapter 5 from The Hobbit (listen to him read Gollum's voice!):

Sort:

I was reading Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings this evening to my children. We've been reading it for months now, a little bit at a time.

We read The Hobbit before we started Lord Of The Rings.

Thanks for sharing this!

Tolkien could be said to be one of the best writers of the last century. In my opinion, a genius to build an incredible universe, feats like his can be seen in Homer or Proust, for example.

Tolkien's powerful voice reminds me a bit of Ezra Pound's, but for the fact Tolkien makes a LOT more sense than a world-renowned but totally unintelligible aesthete like Pound!
