BOOKS AND BOOKSsteemCreated with Sketch.

Books, for me, have always had the taste of rice and vegetable stew. This was the result of my first encounter with them….. But you see, the first book I knew, and which completely overwhelmed me, was the Bible. And both the Bible, and the flavor and fragrance of boiled rice governed my childhood years.’.......Femi Osofisan, ‘Books …. A Delicacy for the Mind’ The Guardian Newspaper (Saturday, October 5, 2002)

Books are generally speaking reconstructions or derivatives of life. Books thus propagate life, by conveying the nuggets of wisdom for successful living. Books exist because of the culture of documentation of experiences, of outcomes, of inquiries, of events, of circumstances, of the vagaries of human existence, of peculiar encounters and many more.

Because they represent collected wisdom (and folly as well) that maps the past in bold relief, books are pivotal. Discerning minds can circumvent the miry clay that caused hapless folks to stumble in ages past from books. Books have indeed an almost infinite enlightenment capacity. In essence, books expound potential!

IF KNOWLEDGE IS POWER…

Books and education are not necessarily interchangeable. It is common observation when you utter the word ‘book’ people interpret it as ‘school’. The link is understandable. However, I do wish to seize this moment help you unhinge one from the other in your thinking. School is not a synonym or equivalent of book. One is an indispensable tool inside the precinct of the other. But the relationship goes no further.

If, indeed knowledge is power, then books represent immense power as knowledge source. Many in our clime are yet to discover the virtue of books as indispensable knowledge source. Do not fall into the snare. When any man decides to tackle books, he comes into the precious possession of the realization that he can get an education of his own preference. You can constructively build your life around books (either reading one or writing it) and not suffer one minute of regret!

Isaac Asimov accomplished a record! The prolific American writer, esteemed for his science fiction and for various other works in all branches of science, had an innocuous start to life. At birth, there was nothing in his background to give a glimmer of the height he would attain in later life.

Born in Petrovichi, Russia in 1920, Isaac Asimov, aged three years, had to immigrate to the United States with his family, to settle in Brooklyn, New York. His encounters with science fiction magazines led him to follow the dual careers of writing and science, and after he gained admission to Columbia University at 15, he stepped up his creative writing flair. At 18, he sold his first story to a magazine publishing science fiction. After serving in World War 11, he earned a Ph.D. at Columbia in 1948; for the next nine years he would lecture at the Boston University School of Medicine, teaching biochemistry. At this time he was to write a science fiction novel in 1950 and a biochemistry textbook with two colleagues in 1953.

In 1958, Isaac Asimov turned to writing full time. In between 1958 and 1992, he went on to author some 500 books for young and adult readers, extending beyond science and science fiction to include mystery stories, humour, history, and several volumes on the Bible and Shakespeare. Many commentators have remarked that the genius of Isaac Asimov lay in his clear description of complex ideas.

Here is what happened to Melody Beattie, and her writing; an account she summarized in the first pages of the book A Reason to Live.

Melody Beattie had a difficult and traumatic childhood that managed to traverse substance abuse and sexual abuse, culminating in an unwanted pregnancy. She rushed into marriage for legitimacy. A myriad of sorrows and heartaches followed in rapid succession as the perfect offerings of love, affection and respectability failed to emerge from matrimony. She got curious, sought what problem could be, packed up her marriage and wrote a book about co-dependency. Later the book hit the bestseller list and money followed lucrative contracts. Unfortunately, her beloved son from her failed marriage to a practicing alcoholic died of brain injury after a skiing accident. Confusion and depression chased about her heart before she contemplated suicide. The Lord rescued Melody Beattie right at the brink and she discovered her reason to live. Her books are blessing people over the world!

HAVE YOU EVER IMAGINED THE ROLE BOOKS CAN PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?

A man who reads wins

The book is the key to science and progress, but for my part I see that the Quran is the light on which the conscious person walks
