I Have A Lot Of Books

in #books6 years ago

...and I love it, so phhhbt. 😁 I've already given away about 25% of what I originally had, so that's a lot into Little Free Libraries!

This is what I've been working on today. I finished emptying the armoire-desk-turned-bookshelf and dismantled it. It wasn't meant to hold that kind of weight, it was a desk. The wood was warping and breaking (well, it was particleboard). It had a lean to one side. I had it stacked two or three deep with books crammed in like a Tetris game. Unloading books into my multitude of cloth shopping bags got me 25 bags of books + two milk crates + four magazine files.

bags o' books

After taking the desk apart, I slid this other (the first one pictured) bookshelf over, and managed to cram 10 of the 25 bags mostly onto the top shelf of this one. I used to have it stacked like this before I converted the desk into a bookshelf, so I know it's sturdy. I've been stacking it with more and more books since I was seven. 😂

This all sounds very simple, but it was lifting piles of books, packing and unpacking them into bags, unpacking 2/3 of the other shelf so I could move it over, then repacking it even fuller. Oh, and dismantling a piece of furniture that had about a hundred pieces of hardware in it. It was fairly physical labor. Moving a bookshelf in my home is not a simple or quick task. 😃

So that's been my project du jour, and I am tired. LOL. Tomorrow I might bring the filing cabinet out into the living room and attempt to stack the rest of the books on it. We'll see. 😉

I was listening to the audiobook of The Age of Cryptocurrency while working. I really like that book. I wish more people would read (or listen to) it. What have y'all been up to today?

When I was single I had a double bookcase in the living room with a comfortable reading area right next to it. Most people would comment on how many books I had! Did I read all of them? (Of course I did. Why else would I have them?) I got used to hearing it.
Then a man I'd just started dating came over. He said nothing about my books. Hmm. I waited for the comments. When he kept saying nothing I asked him - don't you think I have a lot of books? He looked surprised. "I have a lot more than that," he said.
It was then I started thinking I might have to marry that man. And I did!
We have bookshelves in every room of the house, and still have more in boxes. I admire your being able to let some of yours go!

That's awesome. True love!
I'll have to take a final picture when they're all shelved again. 😁
Admittedly I have a backlog of books I haven't read yet, but I'm working through it now. I prepped for the worse poverty times, in that regard. 😉
I always find it weird when I go into people's homes and there aren't shelves full of books!

Married 39 years this December so something's working! :-)

Oh yes - we notice and don't understand people with no books in their homes!

I have shelves and boxes of books that I re-read. Some many times over. Lots of mystery books I don't mind reading even when I know 'who dunnit' just because they are so well-crafted. My husband collects books on American history and archaeology. So no overlap in subjects but we both value good writing.

And yes, I do have a large bag of books that were just given to me that I've only started reading. Bliss!

Wow Phe! That is a ton of books! I'm jealous. I've moved back and forth across the country so many times that over the years I've had to give away most of my books. They were too heavy to keep! I have maybe one small bookcase of books that are mine and not kids books. 🙄

Books are why I'm like, hmm, could the suspension of a tiny house on wheels or a schoolie handle my books, or do I need a foundation? 😂

I am a book collector too. So was my mother-in-law. When I clean out her house (she had lived there for 54 years) I had so many books to donate/sell/discard! Literally thousands of books. They were stacked three deep on shelves all over the house. I promised myself that I would not do the same thing, so once a year I have to go on a ruthless cull of my books. It is a good feeling though to have spent a day moving everything around!

I thought I would never be able to cull books, so whittling it down by a quarter is a massive achievement to me. 😂
