[Book Review] Trans Galactic Insurance: Adventures of a Jump Space Accountant

I read a lot. Like, a lot. I definitely get my money's worth out of Amazon's Kindle Unlimited. So I thought it would be fun to start reviewing the books I read. Mostly sci-fi/fantasy genre fiction, so don't be disappointed if you don't find abstruse prose in the demesne of my literary sights. See how annoying that is?

These reviews are not about the plot of the story. I guess they are meta-reviews about whether the book is worth reading or not. It's more about the experience of reading the book rather than the story itself.

Jake is the first belter ever to study at the TGI Orbital station to be a merchant officer. He’s quiet, hard-working, conscientious, and a good student. In other words, boring. He’s so poor he can’t afford to buy beer, but that doesn’t matter - his scholarship pays for everything and he just has to keep his head down study hard, and graduate. But life is full of surprises. Suddenly he’s expelled and accused of murder. The planetary militia is searching for him and there is a bounty on his head. He’s just a student– how will he survive when it seems like the whole ring system is out to get him?

OK, first and foremost I thought this book was going to be funny. It's not. The title is pretty ridiculous, but the story is more of a normal sci-fi coming of age with some murder and intrigue along the way.

The second thing is that it's a bit dystopian, which is not at all evident from the description.

And third, we have one of our autistic savant main characters in this one. He can reconcile shipping manifests like no other, but he can't talk to a girl or shoot a gun.

It's like everything is set to 10 with this guy. I think the author would do better to make him a more believable character.

Overall rating: OK enough to read the next one.
