My Son Loves These I Survived Books
My son loves reading. But not fiction books; he mostly reads non-fiction. Books about animals, trees, the Guinness Book of World Records, etc. He has no interest in fantasy or magic. None of the normal book series aimed at kids really hold his attention. Until he found these.
Each book talks about the experience of a person surviving a natural disaster, or other life-threatening ordeal. There are some very realistic details and historical facts in these books, but the characters are all fictional. At the end of each book, there is a section that talks about the actual disaster (the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, for example), and some facts about other events of this type (earthquakes in general). It's this mix of fact and fiction that makes this an interesting read for my son.
But apparently it's not just my son. These books are quite popular, and well regarded. It's a good way to teach kids some history, but keep them engaged at the same time. Are your kids into these as well?

Yup. These are a popular series with my son too. He is fascinated by real life stories, especially real stories told from the perspective of kids his age. Can't get enough!

Now that he's shown an interest in these, I'm trying to think of other books kind of like it that he might like. I thought about the Hatchet series next.

Not only are these really popular with younger students, but they're really nice for older students who "aren't readers" or are struggling readers, because they see a short book and think that it's easy, but then they actually read it and develop an interest.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Then these books are very important indeed. Whatever we can do to get kids interested in reading and the world around then, I say is a positive.
