RE: Untimely Book Reviews: Coot Club by Arthur Ransome (1934) - A Window Into UK Childhood Past
Ahhhh yes.....omg I was thinking about this just the other day, how kids "back then" were so much more apt and responsible. How they got to learn so much on their own, how much more trust they must have felt from adults. I hate fearing for my children so much, I often have to reign myself in, but also, it's like a social pressure thing too, like if I don't watch them super closely I'll be seen as a bad parent, it's fucked!
I want kids to be able to explore their world. I want kids to be able to travel and tramp around on their own. Yet, will someone call child protective services on me if I let my kids do that? The unfortunate answer is YES.
I would be in so much trouble if we had kids. For one thing, I sure as hell wouldn't buy "child safety seats" for them, which have been proven to provide no safety benefit at great cost, and would make a kid feel they are both as fragile and as precious as a Faberge egg. (Are those required in Canada?)
Why do we treat our kids like it's the end of the world if they get a scrape or have their feelings hurt until they're 18, then say, time to sign up for the draft - hope you like killin'...
Ugh, I'll save the rest of the rant for another post.
Yes, seats are required, and it gets even better...some kids depending on their weight have to be in them until they are 7 for Pete's sake! Also, cops do random checks on the roads for that 'safety' type shit. And to put the cherry on the cake, they now say that child seats EXPIRE! Forcing no one to be able to use hand-me-downs because they are also "unsafe"! Talk about a fucking money grab or what?!!!!! My in laws car got in a minor accident, and they had to dispose of their 2 booster seats they had in there for our kids, and the insurance company bought 2 new ones. It's OBSCENE!! Stuff that really makes me wanna blow my top. Yeah, can't wait to read your upcoming post!!
