In the letter, the philosopher asks an editor to send him copies of his book 'Revelations'.
It is dated October 1, 1879 and is considered "extraordinarily rare."
An "extraordinarily rare" letter written by the German philosopher Karl Marx and dated October 1, 1879 was sold this Thursday for more than $ 53,000 (43,000 euros) at an auction in Boston (Massachusetts, USA).
In the letter sent from London, Marx asked the English publisher Collet Dobson for copies of his book Revelations, the auction house RR Auction reported.
"Upon my return from the seashore I found your letter of September 23. I would be very pleased if you would kindly send me some of the copies of the 'Revelations', since I do not have any left," Marx wrote in that letter.
The sheet on which Marx wrote this short message is "brilliant", while the writing is "dark, precise and easily readable despite the small and distinctive hand" of the philosopher, the experts described. The publication to which Marx refers clearly, Revelations of the diplomatic history of the eighteenth century, was published in several issues in the press from August 1856 to April 1857.
"Marx's letters are extraordinarily rare and virtually non-existent outside institutions: in almost forty years of activity, this is the only one we have found," Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auction, said in a statement.
Photograph of Gandhi In the same auction, the American firm sold a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi signed by himself for 41,806 dollars (34,000 euros).
The photo, in which Gandhi is seen walking next to the Indian politician Madan Mohan Malaviya after the second session of the Indian Round Table Conference, is signed in fountain pen with "MK Gandhi".
As a delegate on behalf of the Indian National Congress, Gandhi attended the second session of the Round Table Conference organized in London, a British initiative with the aim of discussing constitutional reforms in India.
"We are not surprised that this giant of the twentieth century still resonates today," said Livingston in the same statement.
