Tolkien's Sigurd & Gudrún Discussion with Signum University (Online)

in #books7 years ago

If you're into J.R.R. Tolkien's non-Middle-earth works, you should consider checking out this free three-part discussion on The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrún from Signum University. It starts this Thursday at 11:30 AM EDT, with additional sessions following next Tuesday and Thursday at the same time. (Note, it really is free, though they have a suggested $20 donation to help support future seminars.)

The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrún is a retelling of ancient Norse epics of Sigurd the Völsung and The Fall of the Niflungs. Tolkien's version is an English verse retelling, with meter and alliteration that that is intended give a similar feel as the original Old Norse. I've read it before and I think it's quite good.

Most interestingly perhaps, Tolkien wrote this at the same time as he was writing The Hobbit and parts of The Lord of the Rings. For those who like Tolkien's more famous stories, there are a lot of little tidbits to glean from here. If you like The Silmarillion, you can probably glean even more from this work, since some of the Norse legends served as source material for the stories that cropped up in that book.

I've participated in some of the previous seminars Signum has done, and they're great. They also hold roundtable discussions, and I was a talking head in one in January about Rogue One and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

If you can't make the sessions live, you can still view it for free. All of the video from Signum's chats and seminars are uploaded to the university's YouTube page.

Full Disclosure: I just finished my MA at Signum University and I have done some work for the organization (content writing, marketing, social media, etc.) in exchange for tuition payments. However, the post above is my own and I am not receiving anything from the university for writing it.
