The main genre of this book is dramatic, historical and romantic. The book is narrated in the third person, and also in the first person from the vision and thought of Zarité.
The main theme is the story of a slave from Haiti, she is called Zarité. It is about her struggle not to bend to the thought of a slave, she inside is free, as she says "as long as I can dance, I am free". The story is a full story of her life and all the horrors and wonders she lived, how she resisted and how a woman can overcome anything, how she still found love in the simplest person, Zarité never gave up, never was a slave in her mind.
It takes place between 1770 and 1793, first in Saint-Domingue, which is the name given to a colony established by France and covering the entire territory of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Then between 1794 and 1810 in Louisiana; one of the fifty states of the United States of America. In an era of slavery and abolition against it, since Haiti was the first country to abolish slavery on the continent.
Why is it important to read it?
Because it contains one of the most important topics in history, as we know, it is a sensitive issue and it is important to know how society came to be at some point in human existence. See what things have to happen to get to how we are in the present. It is a very shocking story that will make you feel hate, love, sadness, will play with your emotions but will keep asking you what is going to happen, has a bit of something that will simply make you want to read everything in an instant. It is a great story, located in one of the most important moments of humanity.
