"The Woman In The Window" by A.J. Finn- a Book Review

Traveling past the many windows of a city, you sometimes find yourself wondering about people who live on the other side of what has to be the most transparent and fragile of barriers. Set in a Harlem brownstone, this novel is about a professionally, and self medicated, agoraphobic woman who, in addition to supplying and seeking out mental health support, finds purpose in satisfying the curious query of who her neighbors are by observing through windows. Also addicted to classic noir cinema, Anna ironically finds herself in a noir version of her life after having observed the murder of a newly made friend while medicated and quite possibly drunk. The book allows the reader to join her as she wavers between hallucination and reality attempting to find the thin line that divides factual clues from her personal fiction in solving a murder mystery.

As the main character is an observer by nature, the book is excellently notated with the smallest details of human interaction that those with this habit expertly notice and almost reverently commit to memory. Interestingly, the novel is divided into both chapters and date entries which gives the story the diary-like feeling of an account of events from a central perspective. Well defined actions and thoughts naturally lend the story an air of suspense and those with a psychological bent in literature preference will find this book invaluable as an experience of what those with agoraphobia suffer through. As previously mentioned, Anna is practically obsessed with classic noir cinema so the book is riddled with classic black-and-white movie titles, themes, famous lines and phrases with a particular focus on Hitchcock films that have been deftly woven into the storyline. In sum, if you like murder mysteries, people watching, researching psychological disorders, suspense and classic suspense noir films, this is a book for you. For the record: I'm keeping this one!
