She was born in a family associated with movies in some way or the other. Her dad, Mahesh Bhatt is a film maker, director and producer whereas her mom, Soni Razdan was a yesteryear actress. Alia appeared as a child artiste in the movie 'Sangharsh' in the year 1999. She later made her acting debut in the year 2012 with the movie 'Student of the Year'.

A couple of years later, she was seen in the movie 'Highway' where her performance was received well and appreciated by critics. For her wonderful performance in the movie, she also won a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Slowly, she established herself as an actress to lookout for with movies such as '2 States' and 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya', both of which were released in the year 2014.

In early 2016, she was seen in a family drama 'Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921)' in which she gave yet another strong performance. 2012- 2014: Debut and Initial Success

Alia Bhatt made a grand debut in the year 2012 along with two other debutants Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan in the movie 'Student of the Year'. The movie went on to become a huge success thereby putting these newbies in the spotlight. Critics were happy with her performance in the movie, in which she brought out class and an aura of confidence around her.

A couple of years later, she was seen in three movies, 'Highway', '2 States' and 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya'. In the movie 'Highway', she gave a stellar performance, probably one of her best in many more such performances to come. Critics gave thumbs up to her nuanced and deft performance and termed her as one of the most promising new comers. In the movie '2 States' she easily blends in the role and the character required in the movie. The movie was a super hit and put Alia on the route towards success. Her final movie of the year 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya' proved to be her second consecutive movie to gross more than 100 crores at box office after '2 States'. Her performance was once again appreciated.

The year 2015 did not go well for Alia, as her only movie of the year 'Shaandaar' did not live up to expectations. For the first time, she was criticized for her poor acting. But, she made up for the debacle by playing a lively girl in the 2016 movie 'Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921)'. The movie was critically acclaimed and did fair business at the box office. Later in the year, she was seen in the critically acclaimed movie 'Udta Punjab' where she gave one of her career's best performances till date.
