Pennsylvania State Police say two residents of Snyder County lost nearly $19,000 in a bitcoin scam.

The victims were contacted by someone who said he was from the Internal Revenue Service and needed to check their tax returns. They were then told that they owed the money and had to pay it immediately for a refund.

The victims sent money via Western Union and MoneyGram from their bank accounts, but never received a refund. Scammers also use fake names and phishing email addresses to send messages.

The scammer told a victim he was able to access her account because she gave him the password when she bought bitcoin online three years ago. Another victim told police he was contacted by someone claiming to be from the IRS, who claimed he couldn't access the account because the account was locked after the hacker's computer. steal his identity.
