didn't say you where wrong or right :) but the lower f stop aperture wide open gives small DOF , and low aperture aperture almost closed gives high depth of field , that is why in landscape photograohy people like to use a tripod and f8 and up to get most parts in focus.
it sure is :) and not everything works at f1.7 you really need to practice with it same goes for f 1.4 but that is for another post .
The lower the f stop value the higher the depth of field. Budding photographer here :)
