What is a good cryptocurrency to mine in 2017/2018 with a CPU?

in #boinc7 years ago

There’s none.

But if you are still adamant on doing it, I would suggest you to try open source computing grid.

You would basically dedicate your computing power to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) projects and in return your would get rewarded with some Gridcoins.

There are hundreds of projects working on the betterment of the society. You can be part of it while just leaving your computer running in idle time.

It’s pretty much simple to get started. You can either crunch solo or join a pool. Then select a project only from the whitelist. Download and install Gridcoin wallet, setup your BOINC Manager and you are ready to contribute to the world.

Just to say, Gridcoin at present is not something you do for profit. Certainly an investment for the future though.

At present it is a way for people who donate computing power to science and good causes to offset there electricity costs.

The biggest draw is that you are supporting research, and you can choose which projects to support for the good of mankind. It is a way of encouraging charitable donation to computational scientific issues.

Current Proof of Work (PoW) cryptos waste so much potential power and the associated energy, it is ridiculous. This power should be going to something useful.

You are right. It's not profitable rather just a cause to contribute to while you are watching movie, reading a book etc. You could really use your idle time for something that is better for all of us while earning a few coins on the side.. Thanks for commenting.

Looks like a non-profitable venture...

Gridcoin actually is profitable if your electricity cost is lower than 20.27 Cent / kWh when running an Odroid. Don't get me wrong, I am here for the science.
You can read about the Odroid profitability in the post I just made here.

Interesting work you made their in the article. I did not know about Odroid. If I had more money I would have set up my own solar system. It's the best option so far.

I tried to calculate how a full solar setup for the Odroid would look like (24/7 and during winter as well), but that was way to much. Maybe I will try to run it from solar during daytime or something :)

If you could manage more than a few batteries? Daytime is also fine, that makes it half a cut. Not bad.
