Boat capsizes in Vijayawada, 12 feared dead

VIJAYWADA: At least 20 people went missing and many were feared dead after a boat carrying 35-40 people on board capsized at a ferry ghat in Vijayawada on Sunday.

Unconfirmed sources said that the death toll has already reached 12. Around 16 to 20 people were either rescued or swam across.

The incident happened at the spot where Krishna and Godavari rivers meet. The passengers were going to witness Pavitra Krishna Harati that happens every day in the evening.
The boat was said to be overloaded and the buoyancy of water changed at the Pavitra Sangham which led to the imbalance.
It is the deepest point in Krishna river downstream of Nagarjunasagar.

Most of them are said to be from Ongole in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district . The boat belongs to a private agency Simple Water Sports.
