All of us can make significant contributions in favor of boys, girls and adolescents with disabilities ... especially if we live in one of the countries in red on the map included ...

--Hi, my esteemed folks of Steemit--

Do you know a child or a teenager with some disability?

It is possible that in your family environment or among your friends you have a child, a girl or a teenager who presents some kind of difficulty to integrate into a society that is not always willing to receive different people. In my case, I have a nephew who presents the Asperger Syndrome and whom I admire for his nobility, his frankness and his great intelligence. That is why when I have had the opportunity to speak to the public or when I have been able to perform some public function, such as when I was a member of the Metropolitan Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents, in the city of Caracas, the theme of childhood with disability is recurrent. So I want to write a bit about this issue to the Steemit community, always so supportive.

General considerations about persons with disabilities

General Comment No. 5 of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the CESCR, which is a United Nations body of experts which Page is here, has established that the terminology to be used to refer to persons with a long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairment is "persons with disabilities" rather than a disabled, or worse, incapacitated person -- and I do not want to mention here the series of frankly derogatory words that some often use. We must avoid the terms "disabled or incapacitated person" because these expressions could be misinterpreted as meaning that the affected human being has lost the ability to function as a person.

Children and adolescents who have some physical or mental deficiency do not suffer any reduction in their condition as members of Humanity, and in this sense, they enjoy all the rights inherent to human dignity, which implies that they have the same fundamental rights as other people and in general should be understood as the right to lead a normal and full life, with no limitations other than those imposed by their own physical or mental limitation.

Society in general plays an important role, and that is why I wanted to address this issue here in Steemit, because we all have the co-responsibility and therefore the obligation to ensure that this limit is lower and lower so that the normal standard of living, in the terms set forth above, embraces this group of citizens more intensely and broadly, according to the perspective of full subjects of rights.

And what can we do?

Well, I think that, in general terms, we should all encourage the various sectors of society that make life in our community, both public and private, in all citizens, the adoption of attitudes, behaviors and policies that contribute to improve the quality of life of children and adolescents with disabilities and to minimize the consequences that this entails for them and their family and emotional environment.

We can all undertake actions in our everyday environment, however small, that guarantee the principles of equity, non-discrimination, non-segregation, equalization of opportunities and respect for human dignity and social justice as contemplated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as we know, it was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on November 20, 1989, that is, almost thirty years ago, and about which you can learn more here.

As you can see, there is too much to do, specially if you live in one of this countries in red:
