How To Prevent Acrylic Paint From Cracking On Shoes? The answer is simple, you have to seal the acrylic paint. Just like most art or painted projects you create you do not want it ruined.

Keep in mind that your shoes will not be as durable as if they came from the factory. However, there are a few things that you should do before and after painting your shoes.

Painting shoes take hours up to days to complete. The last thing you want is for your shoes to crack, peel or chip away.

Here are the necessary steps to prevent Acrylic Paint from cracking on shoes.

1. Properly prep the shoes

Properly prepping your shoes, in my opinion, is the most important step to prevent your shoes from cracking. Leather shoes come from the factory with a glossy coating (finisher) that you must remove before painting the shoes.

By removing this factory finisher from the shoes allow the Acrylic Paint to adhere to the leather and prevent cracking. So, how do we remove the finisher and what’s needed to do it?

• Leather Preparer and Deglazer
• Cotton Rounds or Cotton Balls

Be sure that you are in a well-ventilated area. Apply Preparer and Deglazer to the cotton rounds and rub the factory finisher off until you no longer see a gloss on the shoes.

2. Use paint designed for shoes.

When painting shoes, you want to be sure that paint you are using is made specifically for that purpose. Angelus Acrylic paint is the best paint on the market for painting shoes.

The paint itself is durable and flexible and is designed to not crack, chip or peel with properly prepped leather.

3. Allow each layer of paint enough time to dry completely.

Applying thin layers of paint will allow the paint to dry faster and it’s important to prevent shoes from cracking.

4. Apply a sealer to protect your shoes.

After you have properly prepared and deglazed, chosen the right paint, and applied thin coats of paint. Your shoes are looking good and you want to put them on right now, but wait.

You have to protect your painted shoes. We don’t want them to crack, peel or chip after spending so much time painting your shoes. Acrylic finishers come in normal, satin, high gloss, and matte which is my favorite.

So, what is the best finisher to prevent Acrylic paint from cracking on shoes.

The types of sealers will vary depending on the medium you have chosen. In this case, the medium is shoes. The flexibility of the finisher will allow you to wear your painted shoes.

Acrylic Leather Finisher is hands down my favorite due to its ease of use and the protection that it provides.

How To Use the Finisher?

Before using the Finisher be sure to shake well. Using a rag, paintbrush, sponge or airbrush to evenly apply and allow time to dry. Allow 24-48 hours to dry before wearing item applied too. When dry, angelus finisher gives the leather a water-resistant and non-cracking finish.
