Satellite Internet Why So Slow

in #blog6 years ago

As you readers may be aware I live in a cellular dead zone. I have been attempting to find an internet provider and it is not going well. I just got off the phone with the last of the available satellite internet providers. I am completely unimpressed with their prices, data caps, and speeds. 25mb/s download with 3mb/s upload what is this 2002? With prices ranging from fifty to a hundred bucks a month for garbage. I say garbage because they also have extremely high latency of a half of a second or more. Satellite internet is capable of nearly real time connectivity with data speeds most could only dream about. Yet they want to dress up a bugatti like a lawn mower. I just don't get it. These companies could have the largest market share if they would only pull their heads out of their rear orifices. They could easily be where other providers cannot be with speeds that could push the envelope of current technology. Very sad and foolish.

Sort:

The latency is distance related, these satellites are in the Clark Belt to be geostationary. the round trip, will take about 1/3 of a second, due to the distance involved alone. On top of this we add the normal latency of the internet itself ; a recipe for sluggish service for sure, and a gamers nightmare!
The data rate cap is to allow them to sell as many connections as possible, with the limited hardware they have in orbit.
Look to find a microwave linked company, and If you are lucky, they may give you free internet to set up a local hub. :D
