I agree that the old college method of learning is extremely outdated and that they continue with this method largely because they believe that people will keep coming and paying. It's a shame that many fields still require base degrees which means the old lecture, essay, test approach to learning is likely to continue for some time.
I was at an education/industry conference last month and it was rfreshing to hear that in New Zealand, there are at least 200 organisations actively seeking employees with zero formal tertiary qualifications. At the same conference, an academic from Australian National University in Canberra introduced her new centre on campus there along with 10 openings for Master's degrees. She said, "I want people to join my centre and help change the world." A degree is not necessary, although beneficial, work experience is even better, but the right mindset is essential."
This at least seems like a good start.
