RE: Beggars can't be choosers, it's like living in an episode of Friends.

I wish I knew more about how it "worked" there in terms of second hand. I can add up the furniture and things in my living room and dining room, it all cost about 650.00 including the TV! Head to wealthy neighborhoods on garbage days. We have a month where it's "big garbage month" it's where everyone waits to clean out a house or big stuff. I can't tell you the crazy stuff I have picked up. I am driving my husbands giant white van up and down the streets. Last year, I found an Italian lounger chair someone tossed, it was missing a screw. Jim fixed it and we sold on Ebay for $750!!

No way, £750 that's an amazing profit on one screw haha.

Over here things have got worse since conservatives came into power, We have to live to a budget and really watch what we are doing otherwise we would be up shit's creek without a paddle.

I have moved house recently and where we have moved to is so much better than where we lived before, while we were living at the other side of Sheffield we have seen it all, people robbing from each other, on the waste days people will go through your bins.
We used to be really well off, I was a full-time kitchen manager and we would buy expensive things all the time. we once replaced a basket that had broken. we filled it with rubbish, including nappies and a lady knocked on our door asking if she could have it.

We used to have big collections every week as a lot of people would fly-tip s the local council put a round on to collect the waste.
but now there is that many scrap men trying to make a buck I don't think the council collect anything worth anything as it is already gone before they get there.

nice to chat with you again @vgc5000 hope you and yours are well. :)

We have the scrapper guys here too. Driving up and down the streets and alleys. Once they picked up my son's bike!! It was a little too close to the street ?? It's out there, and it's going to be more and more stuff. Hang in there and sounds like a much better neighborhood!

We had one of our kids bikes nicked from out side the house by some guys who looked like scrap dealers. I went to the car boot sale and they had it there for sale for £15, needless to say I had choice words with them.
They claimed that it belonged to the daughter and she had grown out of it, when I threatened the police and started to ring them, they soon gave it back to me.
I remember reading in the paper sometime after and they had been caught robbing peoples sheds. they got busted by a plain-clothed police officer who had some stuff taken from his shed.
