Overnight (what's a generation or two at the history's scale, anyway?!) they had twice as many slaves just by suckering half of the active population into wanting something they never really needed before or since.
First thing that should be obvious: twice as many taxes to collect.
The next generation is taken care of by the system 'cause the welfare dependent crowds have little to no time to raise their own children and teach them what could actually be useful going forward.
The dumber they are, the better.
The more the merrier.
Blessed be the meak.
Less persuation needed to be applied.
And so on.
We dreamed of space colonies and flying cars build by a society where no one would have to do what they don't absolutely love to do for a loaf of bread.
The productivity increased tens if not hundreds of times since industrial revolution and we're still fighting each other for the next day's meal.
We're getting distracted by false narratives and we're letting them enroll us in groups and ideologies that only serve the system, not the people the systems were supposed to work for.
We're fighting under flags that are not even ours for generations now.
Conventional and unconventional wars.
Take any "-ism" and deconstruct it.
The core will likely point towards the same sad truth.
Not a real problem.
Not one worth living or dying for, by most people's standards.
Resistance is not futile.
It takes brain power, though.
And that becomes a rare commodity by the day.
Proof of brain systems like steem is a manifestation we need to nurture into a stronghold.
Being subversive is not about having bigger, better or more weapons.
Being louder helps, but it's not the most important factor.
It may be about raising questions people have forgot they could ask each other about themselves.
Thinking is allowed.
It's not forbidden (yet).
