Question of the Day: Can pets understand elevators?

Beyond the funny side of this question, I really do wonder if cats and dogs are able to understand how an elevator works. I mean, you go inside a box, and when you come out of it, you're somewhere else. Isn't that magic, when engineering is a completely unknown concept? They should be in complete awe!
