The Pope asks in the US 'Courageous actions' in the face of climate change

in #blog6 years ago

Pope Francis launched on Thursday, September 24, before the US Congress a dramatic call to adopt "courageous actions" and develop strategies to face the effects of climate change, the subject of an encyclical he published this year. "It is the time for courageous actions and strategies to implement a culture of care," said the 78-year-old Argentine religious. "I am convinced that we can make a difference and I have no doubt that the United States and this Congress are called to play an important role," the pontiff said. Francisco recalled that in the encyclical Laudato Si he sought to support the effort to adopt a new position in the face of the risks posed by climate change. It is, said the pontiff, to seek "to avoid the greatest consequences arising from the environmental degradation caused by human activity." In a speech that lasted for less than an hour, Francisco reinforced that an "integral" approach became urgent in order to "fight poverty, restore dignity to the excluded and simultaneously to care for nature." The pope's speech is in frank coincidence with the positions defended by the US president, Barack Obama, although the two chambers of Congress, where Francisco delivered his speech, is frankly divided by the issue.
