We need to have a serious discussion about racism
Growing up I was made fun of
I grew up in a neighborhood that had a reputation for racism and till about 11 or 12 and then the neighborhood started to shift. But when I was small I would get called Half Breed ( that is like the N word for mixed Natives if you don't know) but then Bush N was another one, Red Skin and Muck are the ones I can recall from the top of my head.
The shift
The Rodney King Riots was the shift. That started improving race relations in my town. I was in middle school when it happened. My school held an assembly to talk about race and racism. It brought our school and class together and for the longest time I truly believed that my generation would be the one to end racism once and for all.
Entering the new millennium
We started off decent enough then 9/11 happened. And ten years of improved race relations start to go down the tube. It started first with of you are from the Middle East. Then slowly I started seeing the white race get blamed for police brutality. We started being bombbarded with images and videos of white cops beating black people. But the reality of it is Black cops beat white people as they beat black people as do white cops they also beat white people. They beat anyone they think is resisting. Which is wrong. We should be focused on Police brutality and the color of the skin of the cop or the suspect. But all we see is the white cops hurting black people. This is the main reason for the decline in race relations.
I think so people share things not realizing what the message they are sending out really means.
Today I was on Facebook to check my messages and saw this image on my time line.
I love the images of the dolls we need more dolls with pigment to their skin.
The rest of the images I have issue with along with the question. I know lots of white people who are maids and I know lots of white people who do nails for a living. It is great money. These types of images bother me when combined with racist remarks of questions. "How does this make you feel?" Was what was asked with this post. Well to me it seems like you are trying to promote the hate of white people. You are telling those of mixed race to be ashamed of their white side. These images along with that question also shames work that people do for a living. There is nothing wrong with being a maid or a manucurist. Here was my response to the image.
So when you start to think about hitting share
Think before you do. Is the meme addressing the real issue or is it promoting racism. Racism is an issue faced by all colors of humans. That is the other pet peeve I been having the media saying only white people can be racist. Bullshit I call BS on that I see people of all colors being racist towards one group or another. But America is the melting pot. So many people here are of mixed race. Many who don't even know it. Many are hating a part of themselves and don't know it because they don't really know their family histories.
I am tired of seeing stuff that tells me to hate a part of myself
I am of mixed races. I am proud of that fact. Depending on how much I have been in the sun depends on what people assume I am. I am an American Mutt of many different races and am proud of that. I will not hate myself or even part of myself because of misguided propaganda. This is how I can be apart of the solution by talking about how this shit can make those of mixed races feel. I won't say everyone feels this way as I also know people who hate their race. I been trying to understand that one for years.
Think before you share
You could be promoting racism and we as a people are so much better than that. We are all humans and we need to start acting that way showing compassion and love not hate.
It is so sad that we are living in the 21st century and we still judge people by the pigment of their skin, by where their ancestors lived and by the amount of melanin they have. We as humans have advanced so much over the years and yet we can be so primitive at times.
I wish I knew the answers to stop it. But maybe this post will reach someone who doesn't share that questionable meme that promotes racism. Hopefully it will make a small difference even if it is just one life.
That's a good attitude to have, any difference we can make is well worth it
Hmmm. Idk... I have found that people who focus on race(s) generally have problems. This is the problem in the US, because of the "history" that's taught to children for decades further perpetuated by music industry and Hollywood...many are demanding reperations. Which IS absurd! According to new documents found in Spain, which detail Pre-Colonial America, there was White slaves, African Slaves, Native slaves.. African slave masters, Native slavemasters, which Masters typically had slaves of their own race.
Now I know what being targeted is like. Like you grew up in a bad neighborhood. Got beat up for a time. Belongings/defaced or broken. Like you I try to encourage love. But really I wouldve never found this future if I didnt look for the truth, and try to share with others!
Sending positive vibes your way, thanks for the post.
Reperations IMO is another thing that promotes racism. Noone alive today was responsible for that shit. And No one alive today went through it. Minus modern day slavery but human trafficking.
Ah, modern day slavery... can you outline your thoughts here? Or will you do that in a future post. I find this concept interesting. Human trafficking is a Huge problem, that needs to be quashed ASAP.
That one is a deeper and more complex issue in my opinion created by evil people in the world. I will have to gather my thoughts on how to convey my total thoughts on that evil act.
Yeah do that. I'll follow so can read.
I have some ideas, too bad theyre honest and most people listen, but fail to see the message.
Its nice to have a civilized discussion, about issues like this.
Thanks
I absolutely love this.
One of my neighbors and I were talking about racism just yesterday. Like you, she's a mixture even though what she looks most like is a medium-dark-skinned Black lady.
Anyway, we both think that how our skin looks shouldn't be what we use to judge another person's character.
There has been a lot of judging going on here in an age when we should have gotten past that, and this judging isn't just based on skin-color.
I think I just might write a series on prejudice as one of the first things that I do when I resume writing articles over here.
