Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 05/03/18> The birthday has come and gone, and it “tastes like skunk pee”.

in #blog7 years ago

I don’t know how he would know what skunk pee tastes like, but those were his words right after he took his first sip of a cold beer on his birthday. He did take one more sip and then asked me if all beer tastes like this, “of course it does son, there isn’t any real difference in the taste of beers, and the brewers just want you to think there is.”

He asked one last question “is beer a taste that you have to acquire?” Not a bad question on his part but the truth is, “No, if you don’t like the taste of it now, you probably never will. I’ve never met anyone who acquired a taste for beer, I’ve met a lot of people who thought they might, but they just ended up drunk and sick, the last thing you want to be is a puking drunk.”, I told him. He was done, he said that he wasn’t even going to finish that beer and thanked me for letting him at least try some.

So turning sixteen for the young man was a learning experience, he learned that he just isn’t a beer drinker. Lucky for me he didn’t ask for a glass of wine after he poured his beer down the sink. I would have had to turn him down since everyone knows that wine is only for women to drink.

He did question why we weren’t drinking the normal beer I drink which is Corona, but that was easy enough to explain.” I wanted you to have the beer I would prefer to drink all the time, Modello Especial, but I just never like spending the extra money on myself, I was quick to point out that it tastes the same, but it is a little easier on the head in the morning if I get carried away and drink a few too many. “That’s why you only see me drink two Corona’s at the most in any one evening.”, and that wrapped it up.

He loves to fish, so in honor of his love of fishing let me just say, “hook , line , and sinker”, I set the hook and reeled him in. He can deal with his mother if he decides in the future he wants to try some wine.

Modello isn’t a bad beer, but it is the working class beer in Mexico and here in Texas for the majority of the Mexican laborers that I know. Lime will fix it though; did I mention I forgot to pick up some limes? Oh well, I had a lot on my mind that day and I can’t be expected to remember everything. I will grab some limes before I tackle the last four though, it really does need them.

While I am updating family things I might as well mention that Shortie did in fact make the top ten in Girls Scout cookie sales again this year for the entire area which has over 3,000 girls in it. Last year she finished tenth, I can guarantee that she will be at least ninth or better this year. Oh, you want to know why I am so confident in that statement?

The reason is the way girl scouts rules work, in that at the cookie booth sales there has to be two adults working the booths. Not many girls in Shortie’s troop had parents who were willing to work the booths, so my wife and the other troop leader ended up working the majority of the booths. Which meant Shortie and the other young girl worked those booths as well. Shortie out sold the other girl by over 100 boxes according to the records that the other leader kept since she was the “cookie mom” for the troop. That little girl also made the top ten in the area, I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I know that Shortie’s extra 100 boxes puts her ahead of at least one person, her troop mate.

The awards banquet is this Friday evening so we look forward to that, Shortie exceeded her goal of 1,000 boxes so she will also be getting that patch for her vest. My wife has already informed Shortie that this is it for lofty goals on cookie sales. Those two girls will basically be funding the troop activities with the $0.60 per box the troop gets from each sale. The rest of the girls in the troop had combined sales of less than 400 boxes. Some other parents need to step up or be prepared to reach in their purse or wallet when it comes to group activities in 2020 if they don’t.

Also this coming Sunday, Blondie will be confirmed in the church and we have a special family dinner planned for that Sunday afternoon. Those of you have been following along on that fiasco know that the paper she wrote on what the church means to her was selected for her to read at the confirmation service but she declined the offer. That also reminds me that the wife hasn’t gotten that paper back from the minister and Blondie said she would read it for me since I was out of town when she wrote it and turned it in.

So that should get you up to speed on what is happening in my little world this week. What do you have happening that you would care to share in the comments?
Until next time,

I think beer tastes like the way horse pee smells... Ive never tasted horse pee... But I imgine by the smell, they taste similar :/

This subject I'm sure will have some varying opinions and descriptions. Thanks for dropping in here, good to see you again.

I've let my kids try alcohol. They don't like it, but I have a feeling my youngest one is going to change her mind one day. I dunno...

Well half of the kids I have now gotten a taste, both of the boys didn't care for it. I think my girls I'm going to make then wait until they are 30.

LOL love his description of Beer, I think most people hate the taste the first time we try it but for some reason we try again and again and end up liking it lOL

I doubt he will want to try it again any time soon. The look on his face was priceless.

I'm a Corona person also! I started drinking beer later in life because going out for cocktails got too dang expensive. Now going out for anything is expensive. You just had to mention cookies and girl scout cookies at that..lol! I love those Thin Mints! Congratulation to Blondie and I can just imagine the spread on your table for the afternoon dinner!!

Well you have good taste in signs and beer. Thin mints seem to be everyone's favorite but mine, I like the lemon cookies.
We will be going to the local favorite Italian restaurant for dinner, our table isn't big enough to seat all the folks, plus I think it would be unfair, even if we could , to make the wife and girls cook the celebration dinner.

Lol..thanks @sultnpapper!! Lemon cookies are pretty good too and Italian sounds divine!!

your son is an interesting man...

funny how you guys have this turn 16 take a beer father-son ritual

I don't know if it as a ritual, but I do think it is best to let them try it under parent supervision then out with their friends in some park or somewhere where they might get stupid drunk.

I get your point sir. Where I am from, you just go all out and do it yourself. If your father cathes you, you will receive some good beat-up
haha

Too bad you didn't get a photo of his face when he tried the "skunk pee". LOL I'd say Shortie did her bit selling cookies. This always happens. Some parents just step up to the plate and do stuff with their kids and others don't! It would be nice if the minister doesn't have to be hounded to give something back that doesn't rightfully belong to him...not setting the best example is he?

If I had tried to photograph or video the beer tasting I think he would have figured something was up. Shortie is a cookie selling machine, she knows how to engage potential customers in a way that people can hardly say no, even those who say, "I'm sorry miss, I don't have any cash with me." To which she reply's, "well today is your lucky day, how many boxes would you like?" as she holds up her little credit card reader that plugs into her cell phone.
The minister has been asked twice now in emails about her paper and has yet to respond, I think I may just have to confront him in person after the church service.

I loved the taste of beer :) That might be part of the problem. I'm glad your son got his taste, that's a sort of big deal.

Congratulations to Shorty. That's a big deal. I didn't buy a single box this year due to dietary restrictions but I'm normally good for a few...

So. I got my new riding gloves today. About 3 weeks ago the dog ate one (I'm thinking I dropped it on the way in the house. He feels that anything on the porch is his.) and I ordered a new pair. I have some serious big hands (4x) so they had to come from the manufacturer and it took until now to get them. I can re retire the previous pair that I kept just for this kind of emergency. Last time I lost one was at a toll booth in Chicago. That didn't end well...

I pretty sure I would not want to get into an arm wrestling match with you if your hands are that big. I can see how getting the new gloves would be a big deal since you just can't walk into the bike shop and grab a pair off of the rack.
I will pass your congratulations wishes on to Shortie, she enjoys knowing she has some space in the daily dose and that people actually respond about her and her adventures. I need to do a story on her now that I think about it, she has a slough costume and this year the vacation bible school mascot is a slough so she has been recruited to be the "official VBS mascot" so she has been hanging out on Sundays at the church services recruiting kids for VBS.

I could do with a glass of skunk pee right now ;-)

Cold, with a slice of lime is the best way. :-)

I am not a teetotaler, but I cannot stand beer. I never managed to swallow either of the two sips I tried. I spit both of them out in the sink -- and couldn't get there fast enough, TYVM.

I don't like the smell of it. I don't like the smell of beer breath. I never dated a beer-drinker. That was a deal-killer.

So was being a smoker -- unless they agreed to stop and did so. Three of my serious lovers did that -- and never took up the habit again.

So ... now you see how I wound up with The Weasel. He rarely drinks. He no longer smokes. And he hates sports as much as I do.

Perhaps there are some things I should rethink, but none of those make the list. I'll take The Weasel ... "issues and all." It's worked out for going on 20 years.

@catweasel -- just so he knows I've been talking about him again.

It is funny that you should drop in right at this moment, I was just talking about him as well in another post that I just published. In fact you as well, and a few others, It[s my cinco de shout out post.

Kudos on the beer issue! Wine is only for women....good thing you're cute! LOL!!! Sounds like Shortie has inherited your gift of gab? Good for her! Sounds like Blondie is a smart cookie too? No pun intended of course. Have a great day!

Yes, apples don't fall far from the tree and neither do Shorties and Blondies when it comes to gab and smarts. This isn't my first rodeo so I know when someone says, "no pun intended of course" that I have just been intentionally punned. Good shot, if I don't say so myself. You have a great day as well.
