Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 03/07/18> My Lord, is good help really that hard to find ?

in #blog8 years ago

I deal with a lot of people each day and one thing I know is that the quality of people in the workforce has diminished in the last 20 years. My experience at Office Depot in Victoria, TX on Tuesday is a prime example of what I mean by that.

I had some checks that I needed to print for some customer rebates that I need to distribute and my printer at home needed the color ink replaced so I decided rather than go get the cartridge and fool around wasting time with changing and printing them at home I would get them printed when I got to Victoria and pick up an ink cartridge at the same time.

So at the Office Depot the customer service person at the printing and shipping counter acted like she didn’t see me as I am standing at the counter, but I know she did. She was cutting some laminate off of some menus that they evidently had printed and were laminating. So after standing there for five minutes I finally said, “Excuse me miss, is there someone who can help me?” She told me, “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t see you there, I’ll be right there.”

She comes over after about another minute and I explain to her that I have this USB drive that has one folder on it, with 9 single page documents that I need one copy of each. She says okay and takes the USB, “color or black and white?” she asks, “color please” I replied. She plugs the USB in her computer and then tells me that her computer has to run a security scan on the USB before she can open any files. That’s fine; I understand the problems with viruses and such.

So she walks away and goes back to trimming laminate from the menus. So another four minutes goes by and I say, “excuse me miss, did you forget about me?” She proceeds to give me a go to hell look and says she will be right there.

She takes her sweet time walking her big butt back to the counter and opens the file, “so how many copies do you want?” I tell her I need one copy of each document in the folder. She then asks me again about color of black and white, to which I answer, color. It has only been five minutes or so and she has forgotten everything from our initial conversation. Then she needs to know if I want landscape or portrait, I don’t give a rats ass, just put it on 8.5” x 11” is what I wanted to say but I just told her I didn’t care at this point.

So she punches a few buttons, clicks a couple boxes and says, “I’ll be right back.” Yep, she heads off to cut more laminate from the menus. It took all of about one minute until my copies were done printing, if that. But I had to stand there another four minutes or so, “I think the printer has stopped.”, I called out to her. So looks up and says she will be with me in a second, which ended up being another minute or so.

She plucks my copies off the printer as she walks by it and counts them on her way to the counter, “Here are your nine copies.” In a snarky tone as she hands them to me. So, as I am counting them I noticed that instead of nine individual checks, I have nine copies of the first check that was in the number one position in the folder. “We have a problem miss, you printed nine copies of one, I need one copy of each of the nine documents.”, I told her. I hand them back to her and she thumbs through them and agrees that she did in fact print the same one nine times.

“I’m not going to be able to print these for you now.”, she tells me. She then goes into about a three minute explanation that she is leaving in twenty minutes and she has to finish that menu job before her shift is over. This lady would not let me get a word in edge wise either as she is explaining her situation. She tells me that I would have to wait for Robert to come over and help me; Robert is running the cash register up by the front. All that this lady had to do while taking the time to explain was just click on each file and hit the print button, and she could have been done in the damn time it took her to explain why she couldn’t do it.

It took about another five minutes before Robert came over, when he approached me the first thing he did was apologize for the time I had to wait. Next he asked what I needed and I explained it to him, he proceeded to print the work the work and in less than two minutes we were walking up to the cash register for me to check out.

Robert told me that good help is hard to find, “no kidding?” I asked, “That lady took more time explaining why she couldn’t do it than it took to do the damn work.” I finished up with it. His reaction to my comment was priceless, he proceeded to put his hands and arms up like I had told him it was a stick up, and then started bowing like I was some kind of god.

He bowed three times and then said, “You see this ear phone and radio?” pointing to his ear piece, “that woman wears me out with excuses all day long on this thing. I wish I could just tell her to shut her mouth and get to work.” He told me no one can stand to work with her; she just runs her mouth instead of the machines. His bowing was praising me for realizing and verbalizing what he was up against in working with her. “Seriously mister, good help is hard to find.”, he said.

For some reason I think Robert is an honest man.
Until next time,

So it's not just me who thinks "customer service" has become a joke. We had something similar happen not long ago ... only it was 2 in the morning at an all-night Kinkos ... Cw was the only person in the shop and there was no reason on earth for the woman to have ignored him as long as she did (unless she was hoping he would just go away again ... or maybe she was spoiling for a fight.)

People squall about "automation" ... and people being put out of jobs by machines. I say if the machines can do a better job, bring 'em on. FAST. Soul-sucking tedious work gets handed out now to people like this ... and it does no one's blood-pressure any good.

No your not alone on thinking customer service has become a joke. It almost was like a game, how long I would wait before aggravating her by calling her attention to me. If looks could kill I would have been dead that day, she just would give me some dirty looks when I would summon her.

yes...and when you find somebody good these days...you hang on for dear life!

WOW! I don't think I would have been as nice as you were!
When it comes to doing business in any capacity, I have certain expectations. I've done the retail thing, and could NEVER imagine behaving the way I see so many younger people behaving these days, like the girl you described!!
I came from a different generation I guess.
Write a scathing letter to management. I would! There's no excuse for that! (I got upset just reading your experience-LOL!)

Yes, the sad part is that even scratching a scathing letter out as you suggest probably wouldn't do anything but waste additional time. I know I am from a different generation, maybe a young person will read this and least one will see how their actions and excuses come across to us older folks.

You are a patient and wise man

Oh God, what is wrong with that woman. I know of a few such people personally too who keep talking about meaningless stuff and say they don't have time at all but never do anything worthwhile. I can totally relate to the pain you went through because of her.

Well, luckily I didn't need them that afternoon and I waited until near the end of my day to get it done so it didn't make me late for any appointments. Frustrating none the less for both myself and Robert.

I am glad you didn't get late for any appointments :) Why don't you and Robert give her a taste of her own medicine some time?

That was only the second time in ten years that I travel to that town for business that I went into that store so it isn't worth it to me to dose out any medicine. Now Robert might have a case for dispensing some medicine for her, but that is his business, not mine.

Yeah in the case, not a real need to give her the medicine.

Wow!! It's amazing how some people act like they're doing you a favour... They don't realize that without your business they wouldn't have a job.

Yes, it is amazing how some people in retail act to walk in customers, I think it might have to do with the fact they spend so time on their phones with social media and barely interact with live people it may freak them out or they just answer or reply as their time allows and it is carrying over with them to their work, just a bad habit for a retail person to be in.

Poor Robert must be so frustrated! Sounds all too familiar! Our local copy shop has someone identical 'serving' customers, have used them on occasion when I need to laminate stuff. It's like I'm invisible to the gum chewing gal! When our scanner packed up some time back, she scanned and emailed the document to me quite speedily. When I got home I saw half the page was missing, so had to get back into the car again, no apology forthcoming either, I was not impressed!!!

When Robert put his hands up, I thought WTF? Then he started bowing and I damn near started laughing when I realized what he was doing. It was like he was relieved that someone else was able to see and understand what he has to put up with every day. It just hit me though, that I didn't buy the dang ink cartridge for my printer but I won't be buying it until I get back home now. So the girl has ended up costing me more time that I hadn't realized until now, your half page missing just triggered that in my mind. Thanks Lizelle.

Hehehe...sorry I should not laugh, but I agree Robert must have been overjoyed that someone saw his plight! Sorry about the cartridge! You should write a letter to the company commending the excellent service Robert gave :)

Yes Robert seemed to genuinely grateful for someone else to see what he has to put up with. Maybe a letter commending him is in order.

Quite laughable to think that people still have jobs after events like that. If that was a professional company, somebody like that would have their ass kicked out the door in a second. If you are in a customer service job... you should always put the customer first. Nothing difficult. Just get it done.

Thanks for the read pal. I like how you ended it, I think Roberts an honest man too. Hopefully he won't get stuck there long.

I am not sure where you located, I looked on your page but didn't see a location listed, but here in the US Office Depot is a major corporation in the office supply arena and is considered to be a professional company. This employee just didn't seem to understand the difference between a live in store customer and a standing work order. I am sure her manager would not have a problem if she ran 5 minutes over on her shift in order to get me taken care of and get her laminate cutting finished and end up with two happy customers instead of potentially just one happy customer.
Robert, I believe gets how things should work, he just may end up running that store at some point in time if he elects to stay there would be my guess.
I did notice your "Buddy Up" initiative your working on, I will have to get back to your blog and check that out when I get a chance, thanks for stopping in and checking out my Daily Dose, very much appreciated.

I try to keep that from the public eye the best I can, I'm from the UK though. The office supply side isn't too big for us, it's more of an online industry I think.

Yeah, I get that, she just wanted to get away. It's one thing to make a mistake, it's an entirely different story when you make a mistake then you tell the customer you can't do it because of something unrelated to sales. Sales come first. That is your revenue stream.

Hopefully if he does, he will have the option to shake the place up.

Pop by whenever you like mate. I'm a fan of your daily dose, it's nice to take a step into your life. Hope you have a great day pal!

Thanks buddy, I have to get to work but I will make it a point to get by soon. Nice to know you enjoy the daily dose and my musings as people refer to them.

That's got to be one of the top poor customer service stories I've heard this year. How do people like that even keep a job? How has the work ethic diminished to this point? You kept your cool much better than I think I would have though. I'm pretty sure I would have told her to just do the printing, since that's why she's even there.

When I said I couldn't get a word in edge wise, I'm serious about that, because about midway through her explanation of why she couldn't do it I said to her that you know you could have been half done by now if you would just started clicking the files and print button as your explaining why you can't do it. I should have explained that out in the story. Those words just fell on deaf ears though, but that also just got me to thinking, I wonder if she had the mike on her radio engaged where Robert was hearing her explain to me why he was going to have to help me and he picked up on me telling her that? Looking back now, I think that explains why he apologized as soon as he approached me. I never did see her motion to him for help, so either that was it or she radioed him as she was walking away to go back to cutting.
