The Place With The Longest Name In The World
Did you know that New Zealand is home to the place with the longest name in the world?
There is a 1,001 foot (305 meters) high hill located near Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke's Bay called Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.
It has 85 letters in it! The name is often shortened to Taumata.
The correct pronunciation is Tau-ma-ta-wha-ka-ta-ngi-ha-nga-ko-au-au-o-ta-ma-te-a-tu-ri-pu-ka-ka-pi-ki-mau-nga-ho-ro-nu-ku-po-kai-whe-nu-a-ki-ta-na-ta-hu (40 syllables).
The meaning of the name roughly translates to "The place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed the mountains, known as landeater, played his flute to his loved one."
