Did you know? #64 - The Science Behind Palm Reading
The Science Behind Palm Reading
If you take a look at either of your palms, you’ll notice that you have a series of indented lines. Some of these lines run all the way across your palm, some are short, some are extra curved, and some of them are bone straight. Your hand lines may include a series of little chains, ridges, appear to break off in some areas, or might even just be plain lines. But what do they all mean? If everything in nature has a purpose, what is the purpose of the lines found on the palms of your hands? Numerous spiritualists would say that the lines in our palms are roadmaps to our futures, and when read correctly, can lead us further along on our destined path. Is there any scientific evidence to back this up, though? In this article, we’ll discover the truth behind palmistry.
The Main Lines Found in your Palm:
There are three main lines that can be found in your palm that are usually able to be deciphered by palm readers.
1.) The heart line- This line is the closest to the top of your palm and is usually a curved line that runs under the base of your fingers. It’s typically the very first line examined by professional palm readers and it allegedly tells us everything that we need to know about our emotional state, personality, how we give and respond to love, and how we deal with certain life events. It is used to be a good indicator of future trauma that looms as if the line seemingly changes in pattern.
2.) The head line- This one starts below the index finger and goes all the way across and out to the side of the hand. Palmists state that this line can show people how they best communicate or learn. It’s a good indicator of whether a person is right or left brained.
3.) The life line- Believe it or not, the length of the line in the palm is actually not correlated to the length of life in the person receiving the reading. The length of this line is typically a good indicator of how a person reacts when particular events occur, and gets down to the nitty gritty of the personality. For instance, a longer lifeline may indicate that the person is stubborn. The life line can paint a good mental picture of past present and future life events.
Palmistry varies in different areas of the world, and in some of those areas, they add four more lines to the mix which are the fate line, sun line, girdle of Venus, and Mercury line. These also help palmists get a clearer insight into the person they are “reading”.
But What does Science Say About it?
Palmistry is an art that’s been being practiced for centuries. At one point in the eighteenth century, Charles Darwin (the creator of the theory of Evolution) believed that palm lines could be indicators of medical illnesses. However, modern advances in science are able to show us that now; this is simply due to genetics. However, the only scientific truth behind anything remotely similar to palmistry is something called digit ratio.
Digit ratio is not so much about the lines, but about finger length; namely, the index and ring ringers. The length of the index finger and ring fingers are obtained and then the length of the index finger is divided by the length of the ring finger. It has been found that males who had a smaller number were more likely to succeed as well as be fertile. Women with lower numbers also tend to be homosexual and have been found to be much more aggressive. Men with higher numbers in this digit ratio have been found to be more susceptible to heart disease, suffer from severe mental diseases such as autism or schizophrenia. Women who produced higher numbers from this test are much more fertile, but unfortunately also more likely to get breast cancer.
Conclusively, science has completely debunked palm reading in terms of being able to predict one’s future from the structure of the lines within their palms. While the allure of mystery that comes with getting your palm read certainly invokes great fun and excitement, it’s simply not scientifically credible. It is interesting, however, that the digit ratio of our index and ring fingers can tell us at least a little bit about our lives. So perhaps save your money, and instead of paying a fortune teller, just pull out a ruler and measure your fingers.
