THE STORY OF SPINCO

The idea of a Spin Coalition was formed on a cold day in November of 2011 when the two hoop pioneers, Kelsey Lee and Tara Adelizzi, decided that it was too cold to hoop outside and began looking for new venues to practice their new found craft for the winter. The issue was that neither of these ladies had enough space in their South Philly row homes to hoop freely. As a solution, Kelsey and Tara decided to form a new promotional partnership with an Philly based Art Collective. In this arrangement, these two would help promote the collective’s events in exchange for freedom to use the space for personal practice.

At the time, there was no hoop community in Southern Philadelphia. Kelsey and Tara realized that if a hoop community is what they wanted, they needed to make their own. Their ideal community would not just welcome hoopers, but all kinds of spinners, artists, performers, and anybody who wanted to learn.

The South Philly Spin Coalition (SpinCo) was officially launched in November 2012. Every month, the group sponsored an open hoop jam where hoopers could come together, socialize, and exchange skills.

These monthly gatherings gained so much attention that SpinCo soon began to host weekly hoop dance workshops and even more open jams all across the city. By the time SpinCo celebrated its first full year of operation, the community was no longer bound to South Philly, but was hosting events all over city of Philadelphia. As expectations and goals grew, the name no longer fit and was changed to The Philadelphia Spin Coalition. The abbreviated version “SpinCo” was originally used to represent the group’s roots as South Philly Spin Coalition, although now the new term has become a staple of the organization.

When SpinCo’s home, The Art Collective in South Philly, was bought by a developer in 2013, the group began to actively search for new spaces to host classes. In the Spring of 2014, SpinCo formed a partnership with Bikram Yoga Philadelphia through their donation based non-profit arm, Philly Yoga Factory. This relationship with Bikram Yoga Philadelphia is SpinCo’s longest running partnership and is still thriving today. SpinCo still enthusiastically hosts workshops in their Center City yoga studios.
