Canterbury Cathedral - The Center of English Christianity
The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Today's Canterbury Cathedral, largely rebuilt in 1174, after a fire destroys former buildings, is once the most sacred place to worship in England and Northern Europe
Оn Tuesday, 29 December 1170, one of the most important events in English history was played here - Archbishop Thomas Beckett was brutally murdered in the northwest transcept (also known as the Martyrdom) of the cathedral by four knights of Henry II.
He was canonized 3 years later, encouraging the repenting Henry II to establish the cathedral as the center of English Christianity
The cathedral is renowned for its remarkable stained-glass windows from the 12th and 13th centuries.
Much of it was destroyed in 1942 during the World War II bombing, but local residents removed window glasses. New ones were destroyed, but the cathedral itself remained undamaged.
Part of the destroyed glasses are still preserved in the crypt of the cathedral
Archbishop of Canterbury is the highest-ranking cleric in the Anglican Church.
