The fragile civility of man

in #blog7 years ago

This is going to be less of an article and more of an observation, and a very brief one at that. Recently, as I have stated in previous posts, I have been learning computers and other electronics. Today however something really started bothering me about how much everyone I know relies upon technology in their day to day life. If we were to lose all of our electricity, all of our electronics, how well would you survive? If you're like 90% of Americans the answer would probably be, not so well. The reason for this is an over reliance on technology.
Why do we rely so heavily upon technology? Well the answer to that is rather simple, comfort. This comfort comes at a price however and the price is rather high. We trade, in search of comfort, our ability to take care of our selves with out the aid of technological assistance. In my humble opinion this is a very foolish trade, especially considering the unreliability of electronics. Think about it, one major solar flare and we would be plunged in to chaos.
I think people should be taught how to take care of themselves without any electronic assistance. Reading a map, making fire, tracking and trapping food, all these things should be common knowledge. This would never be taught in schools however because, we live in a society that essentially trains the masses to be ignorant. There is a problem with modern society, a problem that we desperately need to correct.

Great point, Sebastian. It is very true that people have to learn basic survival skills plus practical skills that allow us to be self-sufficient in the event of an extended power outage. Additionally, community focus is very important, especially for people in urban areas. Community outreach undertaken now will help to ease the tensions and chaos that would arise in a crisis such as an EMP event. Technology not only monopolizes our time and minds, it creates isolation and social ineptitude. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

My thoughts exactly. Thank you for your feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the post !
