I feel like.... hmmm.
If we sign up here for free, and start with 0 Steem, we can't post, comment, vote, etc. We can't interact with the rest of the blockchain in any way unless we invest in Steem. They say it's free and "you may even get paid!" but in reality, it costs just to use the blockchain.
Steemit is a company, so yeah, ads I guess. It just really sucks that the average user, considering Steem, will look into it and find they have to invest money just to get started, and they will be heavily advertised to, as will people reading anything they post. They might wonder why they should choose Steem over a free site with less ads.

I sit here reading your comment and as I come to the last word I suddenly learn that can roll over my old 401(k) at eTrade.
