I have never found horror games all that attractive. I cannot exactly say why they have never been my thing, but perhaps one reason is that either the survival elements are so minimal, they are an afterthought, or they are so time consuming you can hardly break even with game progression because all your time goes into surviving. The Long Dark is different.

The Long Dark works because resources are scarce, forcing you to keep moving forward to get more food, better shelter, and material to repair clothing. It is so simple it should be obvious.

Mechanics

Gather, craft, break down, and build up. It's that simple. You have 4 resources: food, water, sleep, exposure. If they all are in the red, then you die. Alternatively, being mauled by a wolf will dispatch you much faster.

Graphics

The graphics are very artistically well crafted. The semi-cartoon style is really creepy and looks quite fitting for the theme.

Not a massive fan of the genre, but it does well for what it is with the exception of random marauding wolves. F*ck the wolves man.
