A tiresome weekend
It's only thursday and already I know I'm in for a tiresome weekend.
Not because of anything I have planned. Oh no, we don't have any plans at all for this weekend. No, it won't be anything we do.
This weekend is one of the (if not the) biggest music festivals in the country. And it just so happens to basically be in our backyard.
Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but it's 1 or 2 kilometers away. It's even closer to us than the amusement park is. Their little music spectacle on wednesdays until 11 in the evening is hearable here, but it pales in comparison to what's in store for us this weekend.
We knew this was coming. We knew this when we bought the house. There's this festival (Lowlands) and there's another one (Defqon), which are very close by, very noisy and very busy. It's no surprise.
As soon as we found out our bid was accepted and we were buying this house, I was wondering how much of the festivals we would hear. This is the first one, seeing as we bought the house a couple of days after Defqon had ended. I wanted to be home for this one. Just to know if we need to plan vacations or weekends away around these festival dates in the future.
Hubby talked to people at work yesterday. They told him traffic would be bad. It would be bad starting today, thursday. The festival doesn't start until tomorrow, but today many people arrive for the camping site. Hubby didn't believe them. Hubby checked online to read about past experiences.
Hubby arranged to work from home today and tomorrow.
Yesterday evening, we shopped for groceries for the entire weekend. It was a good call.
This morning, traffic is already becoming bad. It will probably only intensify throughout the day. We live fairly close to a side-road and I could hear many enthousiastic people. Probably hanging out by their car, waiting for the camping site to open up.
I'm not sure how bad traffic will be throughout the weekend. There's people who have tickets for the whole event, but I think there are also day cards, so people will be coming and going all weekend.
The vacation homes on this and our neighbouring park are probably all sold out too. Normally everything needs to be as quiet as possible on our park after 11 in the evening. It will probably be a little less peaceful this weekend.
Tomorrow, music will start. We'll definitely be hearing that. It will last until 5 in the morning. Every day this weekend. I hope my earplugs are up for the task and I hope they won't hurt me too much this weekend, because I want them in every night.
So, we'll see how much (or little) sleep I'll get this weekend! I'm glad I'm finally able to find out how badly we need to be away from here the next time there's a festival.
Oh, and I also want to go to the amusement park this weekend. Get on up into the ferris wheel and see the festival terrain from a distance!

That sounds like a fun thing to do @playfulfoodie. Maybe you can find some other fun stuff associated with the festival and it won't all be bad.
What sort of ear plugs do you use? I've never found any that work for me? 😊
We ended up not going anywhere this weekend! No ferris wheel, but that's okay. The noise was a lot less than I was expecting, so it was all good!
Regular ear plugs are all too big for me and hurt my ears very quickly. I used to cut them up into much smaller ones, but that takes too much work when you regularly want to replace them.
I had sleeping ear plugs specially fitted for my ears about two years ago. They fit much better and hurt a lot less. They are still no help against a snoring partner, but they help with filtering out background noise. They also work fine at concerts, though there are special music plugs for that too. Probably with other filters for better music.
My ear plugs are for people who sleep on their side. I'll tell you though, my ears still hurt when I use them and I sleep on my side. When I sleep on my ear with one of these plugs in, it'll start hurting after a couple of hours, so I usually just switch them when I turn in bed. One ear on the pillow, the other ear gets plugged.
I doubt there are any plugs that work well enough to drown out a sleeping partner, so sadly, we decided to sleep in seperate bedrooms. It's the lesser of two evils, because we don't want to be cranky towards each other due to bad sleep.

Sadly no, not against bad snoring. I guess we'll either have to keep sleeping apart, or suffer through some less than ideal sleeping conditions. It's a sad situation, but a good night's rest is quite important.
I agree @playfulfoodie. John has a spray that helps which he uses when we're away from home but it's not good enough for daily use. 😊
You are brave. I used to live close to the downtown area in a small but thriving college town in Kansas. In the summertime, there would be free concerts downtown which were loud but ended at 10 or 11 pm. It was the bar patrons (AKA college students) walking home after the bars had closed talking and laughing loudly that happened on the regular.
I don't live there and do not miss it one bit.
Hopefully the purchase price was made more affordable due to the twice yearly festivals. (I am not much of a festival/large gather kind of gal.)
This weekend, I found the people arriving home after the festival were much more annoying and noisy than the festival itself.
I don't think so, though this weekend I noticed we barely hear the festival. It will depend on the wind direction ofcourse, but we lost no sleep over the festival sounds atleast. Just the people coming back home, but we live on a recreational park, so there's always the chance of bad/noisy neighbours for a week or two. The upside is they will leave once their vacation is over, while we remain behind in this beautiful place :-)
Neither am I and we mostly avoid it as much as possible. The only real exception for me are fantasy festivals/fairs. Sure they're busy aswell, but the people there are just different. The atmosphere is much more friendly, people keep the place clean (seems they actually use trashcans), there are many people in awesome costumes and the music is good.
