quit whining about your waist harness

I hear it all the time with students that transition from a seat harness to a waist harness;

"my harness is riding up"
"it hurts"
"Isn't there a better waist harness?"

Well, here's the thing; the problem isn’t the harness, the problem is your posture.

Chances are you first learned how to kite board in a seat harness and grew accustomed to “sitting down” into the harness when riding. If you do this while wearing a waist harness, it will ride up. You need to ride more with your chest back and activate your core muscles.

Also, as you progress in the sport you will learn that unless you are trying to jump or do tricks you don’t NEED to have the bar sheeted in. When everyone if first learning they have the bar sheeted in too much 80% of the time which puts unnecessary pressure on the spreader bar and when that pressure is higher on your body it can feel more uncomfortable. When the pressure is lower (as in a seat harness) the rider just sits down into the pressure and will not notice it really. But when that same over-sheeted rider wears a waist harness, it can get really uncomfortable.

Riding comfortably in a waist harness is all about efficiently flying the kite. Engaging power from the kite when necessary and allowing it to fly as it is designed to fly which is just sheeted in from luffing. Watch the canopy when you are riding and if it is luffing sheet in just enough to make it stop luffing.

Another thing that will happen as the rider tends to progress from beginner to more advanced is they will fly the kite less at 12 o’clock. When the kite is positioned at 12 it is exerting an upward pressure on the harness of the rider. This tends to cause wedgies for the seat harnessed rider and causes discomfort overtop of the ribs for the waist harnessed rider. As you progress you will tend to fly the kite less over-head because you will be up and riding more than you will be sitting in the water.
