My teen's first accident.
My 17 year old son had his first accident (in MY car) after the first snowfall of the year. It goes without saying that I am happy that he was not injured, and that he didn't hurt anyone else.
The car lost grip and spun out and rolled backwards over a curb. These type of accidents are not uncommon thoughtout the hills of our hometown.
The damage was minimal... $265 for a finished bumper cover that he can install himself.
It's not a big deal, but as a parent what do you do in such a situation? It was an accident. His first experience driving in snow.
I AM angry that my car is damaged, I can well afford it pay for repairs so I don't need drain his savings, and he is very remorseful. But does my teen learn about casual consequence...cause and effect?
A few days have passed and I have shared my own stories of winter accidents and close calls. Now we have more in common then just a day before.
He will repair the car. I will pay. We will both hope for a season with little snowfall.
It will be an experience for him.
Every one of us had the first winter behind the wheel.
I've had a few close calls, especially when I was delivering Thai food in the snow and had to drive fast enough to get the food there warm but slow enough to stay on the road. Glad no one was hurt and the damage was minimal
