My TOP 5 Favorite Netflix Shows: January 2018

in #blog6 years ago

I know I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that a show is only considered "good" based entirely on one's taste. Nevertheless, I am here today to share my favorite shows.

Here are my Top 5 Netflix shows, starting with 5th:

5. DARK

Dark is a German science fiction thriller web series co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. It is the first German-language Netflix original series, and debuted on Netflix's streaming service on December 1, 2017. The first season received mostly positive reviews from critics. Positive and negative comparisons were made to the Netflix series Stranger Things.

When local children in the German town of Winden start disappearing, it brings to light the fractured relationships, double lives, and dark past of four families living there, revealing a mystery that spans three generations.

Central characters include Jonas Kahnwald, a teenager struggling to cope with his father’s suicide; police officer Ulrich Nielsen, whose brother disappeared 33 years earlier; and police chief Charlotte Doppler.

Beginning in 2019, the story soon spreads to include storylines in 1986 and 1953 via time travel, as certain characters of the show’s core families slowly grow aware of the existence of a wormhole in the cave system beneath the local nuclear power plant, under the management of the influential Tiedemann family.

Personal Comments

Dark is like Stanger Things, but it's totally not for children, which I like. The cinematography is good, the plot is unique, and characters are well written.

I've grown up watching Naruto, so reading subtitles are really not a problem to me. If you're not used to it, it's a really great show and it is worth the try.

4. BLACK MIRROR

Black Mirror is a British science fiction anthology television series created by Charlie Brooker, with Brooker and Annabel Jones serving as the programme showrunners. It examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Episodes are standalone, usually set in an alternative present or the near future, often with a dark and satirical tone, though some are more experimental and lighter.

Personal Comments

One of the unique shows I've ever watched. Plots are absurd and very overwhelming. Black Mirror never fails to make me think.

3. THE 100

The 100 (pronounced "The Hundred ") is an American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama television series that premiered on March 19, 2014, on The CW. The series, developed by Jason Rothenberg, is loosely based on the 2013 book of the same name, the first in a series by Kass Morgan.

The series is set 97 years after a devastating nuclear apocalypse wiped out almost all life on Earth. Over 2,400 survivors live on a single massive station in Earth's orbit called "The Ark". After the Ark's life-support systems are found to be failing, 100 juvenile prisoners are sent to the surface in a last attempt to determine whether Earth is habitable. They discover not all humanity was destroyed and some survived the apocalypse: the Grounders, who live in clans locked in a power struggle; the Reapers, another group of Grounders who have become cannibals; and Mountain Men, who live in Mount Weather and locked themselves away before the apocalypse.

Personal Comments

Action-packed show. I liked the first two seasons, but I stopped watching the rest as the plot went to the wrong direction.

2. 13 REASONS WHY

13 Reasons Why (stylized onscreen as Th1rteen R3asons Why) is an American mystery teen drama web television series based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and adapted by Brian Yorkey for Netflix. The series revolves around a high school student, Clay Jensen, and his friend Hannah Baker, a girl who committed suicide after suffering a series of demoralizing circumstances brought on by select individuals at her school. A box of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah before her suicide details thirteen reasons why she ended her life.

Teenager Clay Jensen returns home from school one day to find a mysterious box lying on his porch. Inside, he discovers seven double-sided cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and unrequited love, who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah unfolds an emotional audio diary, detailing the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Her instructions are clear: each person who receives the package is one of the reasons why she killed herself. And after each person has completed listening to the tapes, they must pass the package on to the next person. If anyone decides to break the chain, a separate set of tapes will be released to the public. Each tape is addressed to a select person in her school and details their involvement in her eventual suicide.

Personal Comments

I hated this show unit I reached near the end where it got really twisted. No lie, it really annoyed me at first, but it turned out to be a great show. It brings awareness, which is really great about this show.

1. RICK AND MORTY

Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science-fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Cartoon Network's late-night programming block Adult Swim. The series follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his fretful, easily influenced grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and interdimensional adventures. The series premiered on December 2, 2013, and the third season concluded on October 1, 2017. A fourth season has been mentioned, first by Harmon in a September 2017 interview, and later in the post-credits scene of the third season's finale.

The show revolves around the adventures of the members of the Smith household, which consists of parents Jerry and Beth, their kids Summer and Morty, and Beth's father, Rick Sanchez, who lives with them as a guest. According to Justin Roiland, the family lives outside of Seattle in the U.S. state of Washington. The adventures of Rick and Morty, however, take place across an infinite number of realities, with the characters travelling to other planets and dimensions through portals and Rick's flying car.
