The future of Steemit?

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

What are we looking at for the future?

Well that depends on whether you are looking at 1 month, 6 months or 3 years down the line.

Now I am not a computer programmer and I can't set up requests for figures and graphs to measure the performance of the site so I will be going off thoughts and opinions. (Disclaimer: My thoughts and opinions tend to be wrong so you can discount anything from here on in as being correct.)

I think that as it stands we are in a very important place right now. While all crypto has seen a great year in 2017 for adoption and investment, I think that 2018 is the make or break year. Already since the turn of the new year we have seen unstable markets, huge drops in the price of bitcoin and rumors of government interference This is all coming from the successes of the past couple of years.

Before this, people in the majority had never heard of crypto or heard of steemit so it wasn't a problem for them. Now that governments are clued in and there is so much money tied up in the markets it is only natural that they try and get involved. Realistically the block-chain could destabilize certain banks, currencies and regimes if it keeps going at this rate of expansion and adoption.

That is why this year is going to be huge. There will be regulation brought in, we will lose some crypto's and there will be more uncertainty going forward. However once we get past all the negative side of this I believe that there will be some crypto's left standing, stronger and better suited to everyday use. In my opinion we will lose a lot of the pump and dump shit coins and be left with the useable coins like STEEM, Ripple, Ethereum ect...

All of these coins have a purpose and a tangible value compared to a lot of the coins on the market. Bitcoin for me is going to become unusable but will hold its value as a reserve currency, like gold to prop up the market. That is my thoughts on the market in general.

In terms of Steemit, We seem to be gathering pace with a nice steady increase since the summer. In terms of gaining users I believe that there are now over 650,000. We are number 1217 in the Alexa ranking for websites, which is a list of the worlds websites in terms of use and visitors.

Looking at google trends you can see how searches for Steem and steemit have risen since this time last year.

And on a personal note I have managed to convince 4 of my friends about the benefits of the site, where they are starting on their steemit journey. Up until this point that seems to have been how the user base was expanding.
Mainly through word of mouth and small initiatives to show people how to join.

What I envisage going forward is that people will have heard about the site as it gains popularity and we will see a spike in new accounts over the next six months. It is bound to gain some press going forward as we top one million users and move into the top one thousand websites in the world.

We have all seen the recent price increase for STEEM and SBD which can only help the situaion as people are starting to see return for their endevours on the site. Even when we had the bloodbath throughout january, while their prices did drop it wasn't massive and they have held a fairly straight line for the past couple of months and are now sitting on $5.60 again.

STEEM: 24-01-2018

Ranked 27th on coinmarketcap with $1,391,958,427 I see STEEM pushing into the top 20 coins sooner rather than later as we have already gotten on of the highest amount of transactions per day and with the new users joining the price can only increase over time as STEEM becomes more in demand.

What we need to do to keep things moving in the right direction is to make sure that none of the values which make the site great get lost in the gold rush. New users tend to struggle on here so it is vital that we continue to help and teach them. Some people have created wonderful and imaginative add-ons for steemit which only add value to the site. Others tirelessly run competition and tutorials to keep the users posting and on the chat channels I have received great help from everybody as soon as I asked for anything. It's these people the add the real value to the site and why it will be a success going forward as we gain mass adoption.

To anybody reading this, feel free to comment, follow, advise or challenge. I hope to meet many more interesting people on the site as it grows over the next months.

This is a positive shot toward steem.

I envision something similar for steem.

Minnows will suffer cause they act too much like it.
Let's help them to transistion and together it will be steeming everywhere.
Keep on steemin'

I think so. And you are right about the minnows. Things are done a different way on here to what most are used to and if you are only beginning to use crypto or dont have a lot of computing skills it can be daunting in the beginning. Thats why community is so important on here to help those people.

Hi @niallon11

Did you know the 2017 Roadmap made statements of intention to deploy "community" pages?

We still have no community pages! Just tags and 95% of posts falling through the cracks.

I really hope the developers will deploy communities this year. Facebook has "groups" and Reddit has "subreddits." Why hasn't steemit adopted something similar yet?

Steemit, Busy, D.tube, and co. are nothing more than wallets/blockchain explorers souped up to look like social media sites. They look at Comment objects and render the comment.body attribute as Markdown. They let you perform blockchain operations like post, upvote, etc. But the blockchain viewers have some control over how they display information - ChainBB displays newest posts first always, Steemit hides content that has been flagged enough, etc.

At some point, everyone is going to start realizing that Steemit isn't the only way to interact. For example the witness @netuoso runs his own version of the site at https://condenser.steemliberator.com/ - he often merges in code there that has yet to make it in to the official site.

I hadn't read the roadmap but I was reading posts from some of the original members before the xmas which stated that they were working on communities at the moment. I can't remember which users i was reading at the time but they basically said that their intention going forwards was to create communities similar to subbreddits which will make it much easier to follow content and find people interested in the same areas as yourself.
It was under development at the time but there was no dates stated for when it would be functional.
It should work very well for the site especially as we grow. One of the biggest problems that I have found here is how fast your content disappears from sight unless you have a huge following which most of us don't. Hopefully this will go some way to fixing that as well.

Amazing article dude! I agree with most points. Resteemed buddy

Thanks mate. Its great to have people who repeatedly vote and comment. Appreciate it.

Welcome :), thnx for the content

Truly great article...i'm a newbie and i get frustrated when the value on my post decreases due to internal and external factors. There is too much resistance from the governments, because they don't want to lose control over money as crypto helps in decentralizing. keeping them away from their share and control. But i hope market re-corrects its self soon, so that people don't lose trust in the market. As steem value increases it will benefit both the platform and people attached with it.

I think that we all feel the same way about it. Steem is on the rise and should be a very valuable coin in a year if the markets don't collapse. Unfortunately governments hold all the power if they combine. They can set the laws and regulations for the sector making out lives very tough if they want to.
While we can always work around them and do what we want anyway it will still kill mass adoption for steemit and crypto as most people either wont or can't work around the law.
Their will be regulation for a fact but i'm hoping that it will be sensible and just deal with registering money earned like with anything else. And like everything else we can then hide most of it from them.

Hopefully everything goes well, I really like steemit C:

Do you think there will ever be cash transaction in 2030? Crypto is the future and steemit is the social community. Nice one there. Stay tune.

I think that there will be crypto debit cards in proper operation soon enough. There was three or four that had been working well until visa pulled out of their deal.
I know that there are a couple which should be back up and running with a new provider soon. So hopefully you will be able to transfer 20 steem to your card account and if you use your card it will automatically convert to dollar at market price. Or something along that line.
