Hi, i've been making these mirrors for a while now. Lots of people ask me how its done, so i decided to make a post about it.

I am fortunate to live close to the coast so a constant supply of driftwood is there when i want it. If you don't live close to the beach you can always use any dry branches, sticks or twigs that you find in your yard or out on a walk.

Once i have enough wood collected its time to clean, i remove any bark or dirt with a wire brush and sandpaper. Then into a light bleach and water solution. About 1 part bleach to 20 parts water.

I soak the wood for a few days. Then its time to dry. This is important!! The wood must be totally dry before you start the glue up!

I cut most of the wood before i start glueing. You will need a small paint brush for the glue but i use syringes, paddle pop sticks or anything else i can find to get the glue into the spots i need. PVA wood glue i have found works best. it takes a while to dry but dried mostly clear. Also clamps and anything heavy will be handy to keep the wood where its needed while drying.

The glue up will take time and practice and a bit of patients. But its well worth the effort. most mirrors take me 3-4 days to glue together, all depending on the shapes and sizes of the wood.

With the backing board, i usually try to salvage bit of wood from road side pick ups. But if i need to i use 10mm MDF or Ply.
Once the glue is dry, i give it a few coats of varnish or oil. (Totally optional)

Almost finished...The mirror is attached from the back using silicon. and a little help from anything heavy.
Make sure the mirror is slightly larger than the whole in the wood. As with the wood, i try salvage most of my materials. Again curb side pick ups and charity stores are a great place to get mirrors cheap or free.

And there you go... Now you can make a driftwood Mirror.
