Speaking as someone who has been trained in the sciences i can tell you that the "truth" does not matter, what matters is who is paying the bills and how to keep them happy. I have been privy to observe data manipulation , data splitting, and much more which goes beyond reasonable measures to processing the data, and all because "you need the data to say something specifically".
Being a scientist looks fantastic in the movies, but the reality is that its nothing like that. its no different t any other kind of work that is out there , you have to answer to your superior and do as they say even if it goes against the principals and ethical guidelines set out by the scientific method itself.... to quote Carl Sagan:
What we need to correct is the hooman Condition and our need to "be right", it is our interaction with the process which manipulates and corrupts the data and in turn.... the truth

Life is set out as a pyramid scheme, be it at work, of just existing in a governed world. To live we MUST follow orders of superiors, the powers that be , the government, police, a boss, parents....
in this sense we hand over our responsibility and free will , this where we get the "i was just doing my job/ as i was told" mentality. While at the extremes we find this behavior completely unacceptable, such as the SS of Nazi Germany and the crimes against humanity they committed. In our day to day lives however, we see the same thing play out decisions made by corporations which harm people , the environment and much more and they hide behind the same guise "I was just doing my job/ as i was told" and it is acceptable.
THIS is the current state of human affairs... we have been conditioned to accept this fate, be submissive, do as we are told, don't make waves or rock the boat, keep your head down.... and pray you are not on the receiving end of it some day
