Serbian. The hardest (fun) part of language.
Every foreigner who comes in Serbia, had difficulty to learn Serbian, but we are known as good and nice people, so we always help them.
We first learn them how to cursing/swear because is fun to us. So you can always try to teach someone from (example: Arabia), how to say some of our famous cursing, and then tell that meanin of that is “good day mate, how are you? “ but it really means “Go f*** yourself” and then watch that guy tell that to a police officer, or some random guy in a Pub.
Don’t worry. Even the police officer knows where that come from, and a guy from a Pub will buy you a drink, and made you forget even your own language because you will be drunk as hell in the end of the night. :D
The most difficult part of the Serbian language, is the grammar.
There are so many many rules. You will not use them in everyday communication, maybe never, but still you have to learn them in school. And is a good thing, because you will need that in Serbia, but not in England, or some other country.
For example, I can’t literally write sentence on English as I think on Serbian, it will not have the same meaning, and it will not be gramatical corect. So please, forgive me for my mistakes.
First rule of Serbian language is:
Write as you speak and read as it is written. (Vuk Karadzic Stefnovic)
This guy above is the wrote first Serbian dictionary in his new reformed language. He traveled across the country and collected words, fairy tales, songs.. He is also responsible for grammar, and reform of Cyrillic letters. (If you ask me, I ‘blame’ him for everything :D )
He created new letters, and simplified the alphabet as much as he could.
But the number of pronouns, genders, verbs, cases, and other things (rules in grammar) might just tell you to quit. Don’t worry there is more if you want to learn the language. :D
Is hard to translate on English everything from grammar section. You will see that even wikipedia (We will use them as a witness) don’t have that section for Serbian language grammar. (Is hard even for them :D )
Cyrillic Alphabet Is the official alphabet of Serbia's administration. But why stop there. Give kids more to learn. But, this is actually a good thing - Latin Alphabet, It helps to learn faster foreign languages later.
These are two different dialects, ekavian or Ijekavian. People in Serbia will understand every word, and make fun of other guy with Ijekavian dialects (Why? Because that is what we do.)
But, people who use ekavian, they are not always sure when is the right time to use ijekavian in some words, so we are living in country where everyone is using they own way to say some words.
I will give one example:
Mleko (Milk) is the same word as Mlijeko.
Letters. Thirty liters, to die for. :D
Certain letters are difficult to pronounce. To children are much easier to learn English then Serbian, so don’t be surprised to see three-year-old speaking basic English. You will slam tongue on some characters, and maybe even your spirit. (Just kidding. :D )
I will give you my kid (5) for example. Last summer hi was singing “We will rock you” and “Bad boys”. But if you ask him to sing some song on Serbian, he will just say nahhh..
Children learn this from the first grade to the eighth grade of the primary school. Teachers help them, but even some of them, have difficulty to explain everything in the right way. But in time, you learn.
An interesting part of this language is that, every part of the country has its own word for the same thing. So it happens that people in the same country do not understand each other.
(True story, believe me.)
But the main thing on which everyone agrees is Rakija (brandy). Rakija solve any problem you have, and creates all the problems. But the best thing is, you will be drunk, and probably don’t remember anything you sad or did last night. The alcohol content of rakia is normally 40%, but it goes way above that, even 90%, so that explain memory problem from last night.
Why did I tell you about Rakija? Because it will help you learn faster. :D
Everything's better with a little alcohol.
Nice intro into Serbian, @mcertic, but it would be even nicer if we could see this text in Serbian :)
