I don't have many claims to fame, but this one I am most proud of.
My Grandfather , Ian Hamer was a legendary British jazz trumpeter who played with and recorded for all the big names in music from the Beatles to Bing Crosby, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand, and Ella Fitzgerald. He became very good friends with Dizzy Gillespie after they toured the UK back in 1958, whenever Dizzy was in the UK then he would stay at my Grandads house. My Grandfather knew all the big names in Jazz but did not get along with Miles Davis, once I told my Grandfather that I liked Miles Davis and he was not impressed.
Grandad & Dizzy.
He came from a music family, My great Nan, His Mum had a very popular Dance band in Liverpool that he played in with his brothers until he branched off to do his own thing. He was also part of The Top of The Pops Band for 20 years, Top of The Pops or TOTP was a British music chart television programme which was a significant part of British popular culture from 1964-2006. All the big stars in the music industry would come and play on TOTP and when the likes of the Jackson 5 came over from the States, they would not usually bring their band with them, they would just use the TOTP band which my Grandad was a part of, He also played the trumpet on the theme tune for The Sweeney, He later retired to Brighton and formed The Sussex Jazz Orchestra
This is My Grandad's album he released on Jasmine records in 2005, a year before he passed away, I still have a scratched copy of this album, but nowadays if I ever fancy listening to it then I just go to spotify. There is a lot of great tracks on this album and it's hard to pick a favourite, but my top 3 are, Freakin' Out, What's Her Name and Tobago.
If you have Spotify and you like jazz then check him out, the old boy had some skills.
This first ever album release from the legendary British jazz trumpeter Ian Hamer contains five previously unreleased live and studio sessions by Hamer's Sextet, recorded between 1966 and 1974. Featured musicians include Tubby Hayes, Dick Morrissey and Alan Skidmore.
A major selling point is the hour-plus of previously unheard Tubby Hayes, including a version of "Sienna Red", a Hayes composition never commercially recorded elsewhere and his last ever recording from 1973.
With an extensive 16 page booklet by Simon Spillett, including previously unpublished photos of Ian Hamer in performance.
My Grandad had a very interesting life, and continued playing right up til he passed away in 2006, he like a good smoke which I'm sure is mandatory if you're a Jazz musician, but he also liked a good drink and was always in the pub spending his royalties, as he loved a good drink and a party that's exactly what we all did after the funeral, my Mum put a big bundle of cash on the bar and ordered everyone to get drunk and have some fun while all his old band members and a few big stars played the night away.
This week I will be doing post's about family as I believe family should be the most important part of our lives and after all the bad news we have had concerning family members this week, it has really made me realise you should never take your family for granted.
Peace and love to the World
Will listen to it on spotify!
The story of your grandfather is great! Family is very important and I think it's a great idea to post about your loved ones. I can't wait to read more about your family :) It seems like your grandfather met a lot of inspiring people & he even was one of them! I'm definitely gonna listen to his album on Spotify. Thank you for sharing his amazing story with us!
Wow, Thank you @theywillkillyou
I'm glad you enjoyed reading about my Grandfather, yes he definitely lived life to the fullest and was respected by all the greats.
I hope you enjoy his album, I only grew to appreciate his music the older I got, I will one day make some tracks sampling some of his work,I'm thinking kind of a jazzy hip hop vibe.
Thanks for the feedback
That's so cool. My father is a huge Dizzy Gillespie fan. It sounds like your grandfather had a great life.
Thank you @sarahjay yeah Dizzy is a huge hit in our house, and it feels really cool that he was a part of my families life, Mum has pictures of Dizzy playing with my uncle when he was a baby.
Yes My Grandfather definitely lived an interesting life with lot's of amazing stories.
Thanks for stopping by
Definitely had to upvote!
I was married and in a relationship with a famous jazz artist (I keep it hush on here)
Not only your grandfather but many have said the same about Miles.
What an honor for him to have played with the fabulous Ella and to have a friendship with the great Dizzy!
My personal fave is Bobby Shew, he's a very interesting man and we had the honor of meeting him on various occassions and performing with him. Now he's my son's penpal haha
I loved this post, thank you for sharing!
I sure miss that soundtrack to my life....
Thank you @artedellavita
Wow you should definitely write post about that sounds very interesting, come on there is no secrets on Steemit :)
Really glad you enjoyed the post, I wasn't sure there were any jazz fans on steemit but I was wrong.
Thanks again for stopping by :)
Haha you are very welcome!
I wrote a post on Chet Baker https://steemit.com/jazz/@artedellavita/he-was-bad-he-was-trouble-and-he-was-beautiful-chet-baker
And I threw in a little hint about him. He has played alongside some of the most wonderful jazz artists ever and like your grandfather did, he likes his smokes and drinks so it was kinda difficult having a life as a family no matter how interesting it may have been. We remain friends and in a very peculiar way we still treat care and treat each other as spouses. Lol
I'm sure there are plenty of more fans on here and I'm about to go listen to your awesome grandfather right now!
Lovely day to you⭐️
Very interesting post. If I've had a grandpa like yours, I'd also be very proud. I love Jazz and will certainly have a listen on spotify. Thanks for sharing :-)
That's great, thank you @shortcut
I hope you enjoy :)
I do. I'm just listening to the Acropolis album right now and I like it a lot ;-)
family is both our past and our future..should be proud of it
very well said, my friend. thank you for your input.
Thank you to, for this nice sharing
What a lovely story and wow to your claim to fame your granddad sounds a very interesting man :)
Oh the great Dizzy! Love his music! And now I'll fire up my Spotify to play your granddad's tunes. Also:
"he like a good smoke which I'm sure is mandatory if you're a Jazz musician, but he also liked a good drink"
Man, we would be in such a great company if he still was amongst us. He had all the necessary ingredients of life! Drink, smoke, music, and food would probably be there as well.
Great @s3rg3 hope you enjoy, yes he loved his food I also forgot to mention he was an amazing photographer too :)
